This is how we found out my Step Mum had AIDS, doctors told her sometimes there is a relation between the two.
But then again I wouldn't trust those Thai doctors....
A farang friend of mine with herpes got told exactly the same, sorry if I was mistaken only speaking of the experience from my family.

Re: Looking for a decent STD Clinic
I worked with a particular Thai woman for 3 years and our relationship developed to the point where we were able to frankly discuss virtually any matter. She was married, had been for 20+ years, and her husband was an officer in the army. She had a 17 year old son.
One day she gave me a slip of paper with the word 'herpes' written on it and asked my what I knew about the condition. She told me that she had been diagnosed with herpes. During the course of the ensuring conversation she told me;
- her husband was the only man she had ever slept with,
- she did not believe that her husband had been unfaithful,
- her doctor told her that she may have had the condition since her university days and it was only just now manifesting,
- her doctor did not explain how she may have contracted the condition during her university days,
- her doctor did not tell her herpes was a sexually transmitted disease
I suggested that she do some research on the 'net.
She never again spoke with me about the matter.

Re: Looking for a decent STD Clinic
There are so many recommendations and myths about HSV1 and HSV2. Many actaully contradict each other. I have heard good things and bad things about the effects of these suppressents. I actually read an interesting article about the natural healing process using different natural products and dietry supplements.
I have heard amazing things about DMSO (Dimethyl Sulfoxide) but not available in any of the pharmacies we have tried over here. Also appears to be a 'radical' and unsafe treatment as the FDA havent approved it.
Any other remedies or ideas let me know. I think that more awareness of these things should be made clear. Also hightens the nessecity for contraception. Apparently 1 in 4 Americans have this STD.

And they were correct in one way.
The Aids virus causes an immunity defiency and leaves the body unable to use the normal immunoligical defences to any virus or infection and a severe and ongoing herpes attack, and the cauliflower throat infection are often the reasons people seek medical treatment in the first instance.
The herpes virus can be fatal to full blown Aids patients and chicken pox (Varicella-zoster) and shingle (herpes zoster) can have very serious consequences.

Re: Looking for a decent STD Clinic
Could we perhaps try to bring this thread on track. The original poster asked for recommendations for an STD clinic. Another poster then mentioned the name of a very expensive hospital before the thread developed into a seminar on the relationship between Herpes and HIV.
No one (in post-Victorian times) should be ashamed of needing treatment for an STD. So apart from the already mentioned hospital in Sukhumwit Soi 3 is there anyone out there who can personally recommed an STD clinic.
I once went to Samitiwej for diagnosis. Not cheap - set me back a couple of thousand baht - but quite thorough and stigma-free.

Re: Looking for a decent STD Clinic
Samitiwej Hospital is in Sukhumwit Soi 49, about a kilometre from Sukhumwit Road. Nearest BTS (skytrain) station- Thonglor.

Re: Looking for a decent STD Clinic
As a long-time sufferer of the ailment I know that the meds pretty much do nothing but lessen the attacks, they don't stop them. The longer you have the virus, the longer the periods between 'normal' attacks are. Increased stress will bring on an attack.
Rather than go the med route I go homeopathic. Eliminate all caffein, acids and beer prior to (you know when they are coming) and during an attack.
Best topical treatments are liquid vitamin E (cut the capsule, put on the sores...it stains clothes do be careful) and pure aloe. Banana Boat brand is ok as it has no irritating additives. Boots' brand does as they put perfume in the mixture.
I woudn't waste my time on a clinic. After nearly 20 years of suffering, its just part of life. I tell all my partners early in the relationship and am frank about it.
I wish your friend well.

Re: Looking for a decent STD Clinic
Parrot, does that mean that you must use barrier (i.e. condom) at all times? Or is potential to transmit to a loved one only during outbreaks?
Just trying to get a little education here ....

Thanks for getting us back on track.
It is less likely between outbreaks but still likely to catch the virus when outbreaks are not visible.

Re: Looking for a decent STD Clinic
So.... (2 years on) can anyone recommend a STD clinic that is not one of the International hospitals? I've been told there are many in Bangkok but have no idea where (Suk soi 22 and Phram 9 have been mentioned). Does anyone have experience of treatment at a clinic, rather than a hospital?

Any clinic or Pharmacy around Patpong will be able to give the correct meds for this. Its not brain surgery.
Two cheaper hospitals:
St. Louis and Bangkok Christian.
Note that Bangkok Christian has the HIV clinic for male sex workers (MSM) called the Silom Clinic.
It is at ground Zero in Patpong so can be recommended. It is located 50 meters toward the river from the main entrance to Patpong 1 on Silom Road. Nearest BTS Sala Daeng.
The thai brand of acyclovir is Zevin (oral) and is cheap at less than 10 baht a pill.
