Why not? It'll probably give you some piece of mind at least. Decent shoes are probably more important though I'd say.

Re: Running For Beginners
It sounds like you haven't run for a long time. I'd say do a fast walk then after one lap break into a gentle jog.
When you feel your lungs burning, carry on a bit then stop, because you'll feel like stopping.

Re: Running For Beginners
Thanks again, guys. I have the good shoes. I'll get the knee support and start off like you said, Pat. A rapid walk then go into a light jog. I naturally walk fast anyway, so that's no problem.

Re: Running For Beginners
Oh, and rehydrate with MINERAL water, not plain drinking water. Bananas an hour beforehand are great and they contain potassium that is lost during sweating.

dude, running on sand as a beginner will really kick your ass (well, your calves really) and it's much harder.

Re: Running For Beginners
OK, bananas, mineral water, no sand, good shoes, knee brace. Check.

-----
I just checked the net for potassium rich foods and raisins have 1020 mg potassium and 60 mg sodium. Bananas are at the bottom of the list with only 400 mg and 1 mg. Potassium and sodium work together, potassium on the inside of cells, sodium on the outside.

Rather that than shagged back/knees or whatever it is.

Re: Running For Beginners
Start slow and increase the distance covered gradually.
Remeber to stretch and warm up before and after you run.
Why are you exercising? For the muscles or the aerobic benefit?
Swimming is one of the best aerobic exercises you can do and it's low impact on the joints.
I didn't see much wrong with your shape at the Chrissy party mate.

That'll be why doctors and professional trainers tell athletes not to do it then.

I need to remember to do the stretches before AND after running. I'm a beginner and I really want to do it for the aerobic benefit and for feeling like I've had a good workout outdoors.

I didn't know if swimming was good aerobically. I'm going to the pool this afternoon.

If we can win every game, we're still in with a chance of finishing third.
I can't see that happening however!
Sorry to derail your thread Nats, but this is the Arsenal that bulldog and I are talking about!!

Same as running, do laps but increase the distance covered gradually.
If your looking to burn off some fat that starts after the first 20 minutes of increasing your heartrate, until then you are using up sugars/glucose, not converting fat into energy. Start at 30 minutes and increase it when you feel capable and ready.
Mix it up with some running for variation.
Hate jogging myself, prefer to swim.

Re: Running For Beginners
Swimming is good 'cos it's cardiovascular or something (exercises everything...right Arnold?). Ain't biking also good???
