Re: Martial Arts
Myself - Shorinji Kempo (a japanese 'take' on Shaolin Kung Fu / Gung Fu / whatever the fuck it is Fu) - about 5 years on and off. Brown belt.
Ju-jitsu (forget style, but not Brazilian) - a couple of years. Blue belt.
Have dabbled in Wing Chun, Judo, Aikido and had a lesson of Go-ju Karate (a style I liked the look of but class was in an inconvenient location).
Oh and a few lessons of Muay Thai in London.
Am a bit of a martial arts butterfly. Gonna prolly start Judo at the Thai-Yipoon centre in BKK soon. If I had time, I'd also do Muay Thai or western boxing (which they also offer there) to get a fairly rounded skill-set and a damned good workout.

I would like to think that I would see it coming and avoid it altogether
But if I sparked the man out and he banged his head...then he could be seriously hurt or worse...thats why I will play the weak man and let him think hes won if possible i.e. just talk myself out of it

I saw off two french muggers when i studied in Bordeaux with un kick aux knackers and possibly some other moves that I can't remember (I was fucked on red wine and beer). I ran away after putting one down and legging it.
But had I fallen over and they caught me, I'd have been effed. Then I may have had to take Loxxo's "no retreat, no surrender" approach.

That's my reasons for training and learning new techniques.
I don't and wouldn't use extreme techniques in a one on one situation, but those rarely happen on the street. Facing multiple opponents with no way out of the fight necessitates drastic action including bone breaking, soft point attacks and other potentially life threatening maneuvers. If they die, then they do. Hopefully I have conducted myself before, during and after the fight to be reasonable and given them every opportunity to resolve the situation peacefully.

Re: Martial Arts
Martial Arts are great for a hobby and are useful to imprave fitness. After a few years you will be able to handle yourself quite well. But if you want to learn how to fight and get super fit, boxing, kick boxing and Thai boxing are the way to go. I would also add Greco-Roman wrestling for fighting on the floor.

Re: Martial Arts
My jujitsu seansa' had a 5 point defense method...("up to you")
1st attack by opponent warrants a basic defense - no attack.
2nd attack by opponent brings a defensive manuever and a slight attack.
3rd attack by opponent warrants a harsh defensive move and harsher offensive attack.
4th attack - opponent receives a broken bone.
5th attack (i never understood how with a broken bone) results in death of the opponent.
I should also mention that he grew up on tough Harlem streets under the discretion of a bona fide Classical Jujitsu master and had three bullet scars in his back and loads of bottle and knife scars riddling the BACKs of his hands, wrists and forearms. ("whenever a blade is shown, turn your arms back")
He also professed a system that could conceivably defend against an 8 man attack with your woman behind you (holding onto your pants' waist.) I've seen him do it (in the do'joun of course.)
I never mastered all of this, but felt somewhat priveleged to have been exposed.

Re: Martial Arts
Why not just get a gun and shoot them?
There are hundreds of ways to get out of a serious jam, talking, screaming, laughing, running, and last fighting. How you do it depends on the situation. If you can only see the kill or be killed in every scenario, you have forgotten something. 1 rule is to avoid being stuck in a situation where there is only one option. 2 rule is to walk away. 3 rule is to defend yourself, and by doing so you have to imobilize the other person, not killing him. Break his leg (will not follow you).
Thinking that you have to kill someone to get out of a jam is a bit scary, talking about killing one is one thing, doing it is something different.
I do hope that it will never come to that but a murder is a murder, even in self defense. You might get away with it legally but mentaly? that is the real question.
Amazing to find this topic on a teachers forum.
I was once asked by a student (I was teaching TKD), if I could kill someone with my hands. The kid was eight years old. I told him that once you have to do that you have lost the fight, your goal is to walk away and your opponent will walk the other way (with some pain)...
PS. 8ball, where did you learn your noble art of whatever it was?

Re: Martial Arts
For myself I study Aikido. In the art it doesn't matter how big or strong someone is or how big or strong you are. There is a great teacher here who has around 40 years in the art if anyone wants information on Aikido.
