Re: Martial Arts
Ambassador Hotel?
If so one of my friends is training with him, and he agrees that the man is good.

Re: Martial Arts
^ I didn't know you had your black belt in Taekwondo, Umbuku. Did you study in Australia or in Thailand for that?
I trained in Taekwondo here in Korea, for a year. I have my red belt, but never went on to get my black belt, yet. I've been out of it for awhile now.

Re: Martial Arts
I trained off and on for five years in Australia with a small ex air force self defence instructor's club. He was tired of trying to train sports oriented students for competitions and wanted to get back to the self defensive essence of the art. Hence why it took longer than the normal time frame to get my black belt, that and I failed my first grading for it and had to train for another year before being allowed to attempt it again. It wasn't your typical Tae Kwon Do Olympic sparring training club. He incorporated many Hapikido techniques into his training regime and I graded to blue belt in Hapkido with him once he got permission to grade in the art from his master. I had a major life changing event and left the training and came here to Thailand not long after that.
I came back to training here about two years ago when I came across a Thai Hapkido instructor. His classes were good for my fitness and for some refreshers on techniques going rusty, but he wasn't a very good instructor overall. Too loose in focus and discipline. On the plus side he was a Muay Thai national champion two years running in the 1980's and a Krabi Krabong national champion for a year and he would blend these styles with Hapkido well. Wrist locks followed by Muay Borat(n) elbow finishing moves and more advanced leg blocks from Muay Thai melded with the standard Tae Kwon Do kicks.
I enjoyed the training but gave it up again as I've decided to shift back home to Australia soon. I will pick it up again there.

Re: Martial Arts
Irishntg - sorry, if you read the post again I just trained with and was ringside, didn't fight. A few world title fights ringside, cornered for 2 , 1 in holland this year 1 in morocco year before and been to hundreds of fights. Im hoping to fight in 2008 in thailand.
Aikido is very good for its locks and throws, restraining agressors, thieves, shoplifters, knife wielding nutters, prison inmates but if they attack your legs with low kicks its not good at all.

Re: Martial Arts
Nice debate - going back to the original questions (Can you mix styles) I would say YES! I train MMA, but have floated though Muay Thai, Boxing and Jiu-Jitsu for around 6 months each. I love sparring and my good friend here is a good Wing Chun practiioner. In Samet once we decided (we were both drunk) to fight, I took him to the ground and put him easily in different locks, chokes and the like. He found it fascinating and decided that Wing Chun was incomplete. Since then he has taken up Muay Thai, and now when we spar just 'stand up' he gets more hits on me. His Wing Chun style combined with Muay Thai helps him a lot, he's confident staying in hitting range and throws many quick fire (wing chun) punches. He's been teaching me some basic Wing Chun also which I'm sure will help my MMA game.
Last weekend there was a Mixed Martial Arts competition in Bangkok, it was all Thais competing and was very similar to the early UFC days ie, style against style. Not suprising the BJJ guys won 90% of the fights, but it was fun to watch Taekwondo, Kung Fu, Karate and other martial arts going up against Muay Thai strikers. The Muay Thai guys weren't hurt by many hits, and when they retaleated the others covered up and prayed
It's unfair to compare full contact sports (MMA, Boxing, Muay Thai) to defensive arts, as they both have different philisophies. You can mix both together and become very succesful (JKD is a popular stand up technique in the UFC and Karate is used effectivly by Kyoto Machida)
Most importantly though, enjoy!

Correct you are. I can blame that on a typo - the K is next to the L after all.
