I was really tired of my apartment situation being so indefinite, so yesterday I reserved a studio at "Surri Mansion 2" which is right at the Thong Lor BTS stop.
The place has a lot going for it. By far the biggest thing is location. Out one door of the building is the BTS stairway, and out the other is a collection of street food vendors. The apts are nothing fancy at all, but they are clean and new, which goes a long way with me. There aren't really any extras with the place except basic cable (not UBC).
The biggest downside is just the size. It's a small studio, 23sqm. Also the price of 9850 is kind of high for this small size, but you pay for location, and if you consider the fact that I will *never* have to take a motorcycle taxi and that my workplace is only 1 BTS stop away, and that everything I need is right around me in the Thong Lor area, I think I'll save 1k/month on transportation. I should save a bit on utilities, too, because the A/C is new, the room and windows are new, and the room is small.
**edit** I also meant to comment on another cost-saving aspect. There is very nice, clean, airconditioned restaurant/coffee-shop *right* next-door that has 35 baht/plate Thai food and cheap (relatively) coffee. I can get online with my laptop there and so I see no reason to pay for an internet connection in my room. I could eat there literally every single day, and I'd only spend like 1000-1200 baht/month for 30 meals and an internet connection, and avoid paying 850/month for True.**edit**
Overall, I feel pretty good about this decision, but I don't move in until August 1st and so if I change my mind before then, I will only lose the 5000 baht reservation. Not a big deal. I would still rather share a big place, but I had to make some arrangements because I'm tired of staying in a hotel.
Thoughts?
That would be the place I recommended to you on one of your pre-arrival threads (think it was the Lumpini Park thread!!)
I'll put you down as another satisfied recipient of my usually sage advice.....![]()
Glad you got sorted mate, I had a mate who used to live there as well. You're right, it is a tad overpriced, but it is very, very convenient. You really have to move out of walking distance from the BTS to get better value IMO and most places so close to BTS are much dearer!
Size isn't everything - at least it will be easy to clean. You won't have to worry about sharing with idiots either, especially that Matthew!
Excuse me for not taking this seriously .....
23 sq metres!!!! Bloody hell, my wardrobe is bigger than that. I take it you won't be having many parties there then.

Are you cute?

Or would you like to swing on a star?
Well, not from this end of a trip. All bets are off on the other end.Originally Posted by blackjack

Tomcat do you (or anyone else) know of a no-frills gym that is nearby? I don't need/want a pool, or cardio... just some free weights and resistance machines. Also any particularly good/interesting places I should check out nearby?
oh well, worth a shot....anyway...
Sorry, I don't know of any gyms nearby...I go to a hotel gym in Siam Square. Anything good or interesting is likely to be found on Thong Lor...it's worth a stroll one languid evening.
Congrats on finding you place. Now you are gonna be searching for TV's, stereo's, and furniture. Good luck. Damn my bedroom alone is 24 meters and that does not include the attached bath.

Back on topic, though. D I think it's a good choice. Clearly location was the top priority for you. According to that, this is THE spot. When I looked at the place I really liked it. I love that new and clear atmoshpere. It goes a long way. I'm pretty sure the room I looked at was just a little bit bigger though..are you sure they don't have a slightly larger option? Oh yeah, and the girl who showed me around the place was one of those "if you weren't a random poor Thai uni student in Bangkok working this desk you'd be the supreme goddess of the multiverse, able to destroy whole planets and their male inhabitants with a raised eyebrow" types. That didn't hurt either.
Yeah, it ain't bigOriginally Posted by aging one
It does have a TV though, and furniture, so unless I want a bigger screen or something (which would be nice, but I see no reason to spend the money) I should be set.
They also have 1 bedrooms, which have the same size bedroom and bathroom but also a seperate living room. But they are like 17k, so I would rather suck it up and deal with the small room. There is so much around the area that I don't think it will be that big a deal.Originally Posted by Matthew

Whats the deal with the "sports complex" or with these supposed hotel gyms where you pay/use? I just need a place to lift weights really.
