I did a search for this and nothing came up. Should I find myself a place before I come to Chaing Mai? I plan on staying a few months?
thanks

Is that where you are taking your TEFL? They usually proved housing.
My advice would be no, find a good hotel for the first week and then blitz the appts when you are there in person, tying yourself into cockroach heaven online would be a mistake.
Also you would probably get a better deal in person.
Of course if you have someone already on the ground in CM to do the legwork for you then setting up beforehand becomes viable.
Find a place BEFORE you arrive? ????

Better advice could not be given. If you're a youngster, I'd recommend Neihman Heyman, where there's lots of hip restaurants and the Thai university students hang out. The old city is comfortable, but tourist infested and probably expensive.
Are renting a motorcycle? That's another factor as you could otherwise be paying for a lot of overpriced Songtow rides.
more time for wastin'
If you really want to, book a hotel for a week, but even that you could sort out on the day you arrive. Don't even consider taking an apartment until you have seen it for yourself. Bear in mind that if you don't commit to a 12 month contract you may pay more for rent. After a month of living in Chiang Mai you may wish to move on. As far as cities go, it's often overrated as a place to live.
This is an area where you should most defiantly take the advice TO... Get a centrally located hotel for a week or so, then look around in person. One of the first things you should do upon arrival is to get a phone sorted. If you aren't comfortable riding a bike then a good idea is to try and befriend a taxi/bike driver and get his number... then use him for your transportation.
Jesus is coming, open your mouth.
I wouldn't suggest getting any Thai guy's number unless you fancy him riding you for a while. Give him your number and he might get the wrong idea. Although I must admit I don't know Chiang Mai that well, there always seem to be enough motorcycle taxi riders around in any Thai city that I visit.
As an aside, I knew of one girl who visited Chiang Mai and had her handbag snatched. She was stupid enough to hang on to it, so the robbers decided to slash at her hand and face with a big knife while the locals looked on. Lovely quiet place...
That's certainly true. One thing that did occur to me is to mention that you don't need to stay in a hotel. There are plenty of nice guesthouses around and with the downturn in tourism, outbreak of swine fever, and constant bad press about pollution in Chiang Mai, etc. I reckon there must be a few places that would give you a good deal if you rent by the week.

^ Yeah, maybe too much of "an aside". Sorry folks!
More concisely, don't try to enlist one motorcycle taxi rider to help you out. It's just not necessary.
