I will be in BKK for a month in November, and need to rent a room or studio. Can anyone suggest a place within 20 minutes walk of Silom Rd, up to 5,000 baht per month? Im not fussy but it'd have to be relatively clean and quiet.
Any suggestions are very welcome
The closest area at that price range would be around Surasak BTS.. (2 BTS stations to Saladaeng station on Silom Rd. (20 baht) Or about 20/25 minutes walk)There are a few places, but I think you might find it had to rent them for only one month.

do you think guesthouses could arrange a monthly rate within my budget? I also thought studios may need to be rented for at least 6 months...
To be honest, 5000 for a guesthouse is a bit tight. You might be able to get a hostel around that price but staying for a month in shared dorms isn't my idea of fun.
Koh San Road is the area to go for cheap accommodation, but even there you would be struggling and it is nowhere near Silom. Silom is slap-bang in the CBD and a 20 minute walking commute means your accommodation will be as well. 5000 just isn't realistic, don't forget you would need a deposit of some kind and your bills to be paid if you had a studio. 5,000 is very cheap for that area, and especially if only for one month commitment. Best area for you is around Soi Ngam Du Pree, and especially along soi sribumphen. There are quite a few guest houses along that soi and off tiny side sois with cheap places that are available weekly or monthly. Another potential area is along soi suan plu where old immigration is.
Both those locales are 20 mins walk, 50 baht taxi or maybe 30 baht motobike taxi to Silom.
