Olympic no-nos for Chinese
Seems the Chinese like to converse in a similar way to Thais, but that they've been told us foreigners don't like it Olympic do's and don't's | The Sun |News|Expats|Expats News
OFFICIALS in Beijing have dished out a list of questions not to ask visitors to this year's Olympics.
Questions about salaries are out, as are queries about the age of a foreigner, and inquiries about someone’s love life.
The ‘Eight don’t asks’ have been displayed on posters in a central Beijing district giving conversational etiquette guidelines to residents who meet foreigners or disabled athletes during next month’s Olympic games.
The advice on the Chinese-language notices was put together by the propaganda department of Dongcheng district to educate residents on how to properly welcome Olympic visitors.
Dongcheng includes Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. It is also the location of the Beijing Workers’ Gymnasium, the boxing venue for the August 8-24 Olympics.
One poster focuses on “etiquette when communicating with foreigners.”
Locals are instructed not to ask foreigners personal questions about their age, salary, love life, health, income, political views, religious beliefs, or personal experiences.
Guidelines
“It’s normal for Chinese to ask people they just met such questions, but foreigners respond negatively to such questions,” said a Beijing municipal government spokesman.

“By educating locals, we hope that they will become more socially sensitive when communicating with visitors."
Another poster gives advice on talking to disabled people.
Locals are told not to use phrases such as “it’s up there,” or “it’s over there” when talking to anyone who is visually impaired, and to avoid phrases such as “it’s behind you” to physically impaired athletes.
Instead, locals are recommended to use phrases such as, “you are really great,” or “you are wonderful,” the poster says.
The posters are part of wide-ranging measures the government has taken to clean up China’s image during the Olympics.
China’s communist government and Beijing Olympic organisers have been conducting sweeping campaigns to get citizens to wait patiently in line, stop spitting and improve their driving habits.
In May, Beijing organisers apologised for a training manual issued to thousands of Olympic and Paralympic volunteers following complaints about inappropriate language used to describe disabled athletes.

Now who is gonna' tell the foreigners to stay away from those subjects?
Can you imagine the confusion though as a Chinese and white devil are getting to know each other better over a couple of drinks?.....
WD: So,..you're from Shanghai originally?
C: Yes
WD: Are you married or have a girlfriend?
C: (glances at The Sign) Whaaaa?

Re: Olympic no-nos for Chinese
Ridiculous is the first word that pops into my head. Imagine in your country if they had signs out to teach people proper manners...what a laugh...and how embarrassing...humiliating! The Olympics were supposed to help China to open up...the Chinese made promises...but now it seems that they are proving the stereotype correct...in that...they are lying bastards and have no morals...not all of course...but a lot...enough that you can apply stereotypes and get it right most of the time...not that stereotyping is a good thing to be doing..

Re: Olympic no-nos for Chinese
Why didn't I find these things? I want one for my scrap book of absurdly overblown news articles about China. I'm sure in Chinese it was more like "we would like to remind you that our foreign friends are here as guests. We should present China as it is, a respectable modern nation. It is with this regard we ask that you do not disrespect our guests unintentionally, IE: blahblahblah questions not to ask blahblahblah they think it is rude blahblahlah"
That is how I imagine it went down. Chinese is tricky, and the language lends itself to these kind of wank ass interpretations.

Re: Olympic no-nos for Chinese
China is not a respectable modern nation. Basic human rights in China do not exist (freedom of expression, a free press, freedom to travel abroad, representative government, degrading health and education systems...etc...). It has nothing to do with translations. The fact is that these people suck...are uncool...do not know how to relax and have a good time. They are among the most uptight people I have ever come across. Thank God they have an aging population. By 2040 things might improve when a lot of the older people become too old to function and the younger generations take over. Maybe then we will get some real (honest) progress in China.
Oh, yes, the Xinhua news agency ( ) is such a great source for news. I would read the guardian or the times over any rag from China any day. Sure, they may not always be perfect, but they beat the hell out of state run news....

Re: Olympic no-nos for Chinese
They just don't want the Chinese to know how the west are living, and to realise what a bum deal they are getting. Propoganda.............

see a pattern here man?
just like anywhere i guess- and proved to me by many farang in thailand- just because youre there dont make you an expert. you can have your opinion, but when every story in the media is just blown-up and overstated....again...and again....and again....its more like youre seeing what the chinese are seeing = all red.
ive met many farang who althgouh liking thailand much and having been here for years--but dont know jack shit about the place they stay. they see what they want to see.
citan, believe it or not, the good news about beijing is either sports related or directly from the government.
do you really think youre going to honestly critical views where you are? and spare me with the "my friend can say 'fuck mao' in chinese- in public. thats about as urban myth as you can get.

you know... I loved Beijing when I visited, but after three days or so of being laughed at or having my change literally thrown back at me in shops, people shoving me aside when I was at a ticket window, etc... I'm not sure I could ever live there. I know it's not all Chinese people, but in general the manners were so awful that even coming from Korea... which is certainly NOT known for being a bastion of etiquette and social graces... I was shocked.
