Gary Glitter 'release date set'

Gary Glitter has been in jail in Vietnam since November 2005

Gary Glitter will be released from jail on 19 August, officials in Vietnam are reported to have revealed.
The disgraced British star was convicted in March 2006 for molesting two girls aged 11 and 12.
Chu Xuan Mau, an official at the jail, told the Agence France Presse (AFP) news agency that the former glam rocker would be let out on 19 August.
A police officer at the prison told the Reuters agency he would be released in August but declined to give a date.
Glitter, real name Paul Gadd, has been held since November 2005, and had his three-year sentence cut last year under a national amnesty.
He was convicted of possessing child pornography in the UK in 1999 and served half of a four-month jail sentence.
He later went to Cambodia, which permanently expelled him in 2002.

In another report it said he was considering going to Hong Kong or Singapore...like they'd let him in. Will be interesting to see where he does run away to.

Yeah I know that, but I would be surprised if either of those did, and it will be interesting to see where he scurries off to next time. His options must be decreasing.

I read somewhere that he has to return to Bangkok first, as that was his last embarkation point, then it is up to the Thais to hold him, then ship him off to the U.K. He will get slaughtered by the U.K. press on his return, as he kept blaming them for a hate campaign against him.

I wonder if he will face charges when and if he arrives back in the UK. (child sex related)

I can't see any country outside Britain taking him, and then only because they have to.

Seems as if he is free to go where he choses,however it will be interesting to see if he is re-arrested upon leaving prison and extradited or deported to the U.K to stand trial for the offences committed in Vietnam.

As I understant it no formal extradition request has been made by the U.K government to date.

Why would he have to serve time in the U.K.? Didn't he already serve his sentence in Vietnam? I understand that the U.K. is the home for moral panic and hyperbolic idiocy when it comes to issues like this, but what crimes did he commit on UK soil other than having dirty pictures on his PC?

It was more to do with his drama queen, and fugitive reaction to the original case. While Jonathan King, Chris Langham, and Pete Townsend, stayed out of the spotlight after their convictions, but remained in the UK, the press got bored of them and left them alone. Glitter however went missing in SE Asia, and made him an international pedo of mystery. The original case in the UK also involved a charge of underage sex with a 14 year old but this was dropped after it was revealed that she sold her story to the press. Were it a small number of images, without this then perhaps I could view it in another light, but 4000 images and a physical charge made it all too clear.

The UK does have legislation about citizens committing certain sex crimes overseas are also breaking UK laws, and is not the only country to have such laws, so being on home soil is irrelevant. Whether they take this up with him though is not guaranteed.
