Spanish basketball team poses for offensive picture

Spain's Olympic basketball team posed for an advertisement prior to the Games which appears to show all its players slanting their eyes, a move that could offend its Olympic hosts in Beijing. The ads, for a Spanish courier company, appeared in the Spanish-language newspaper La Marca.

As the uproar over the picture has grown today, more information about the advertising shot has come to light. The ad was sponsored by a Spanish courier company, Seur. Spain's team, ironically, also is sponsored by Li-Ning Footwear, a Chinese company founded by Li Ning, the final torchbearer who was hoisted along the top of Beijing National Stadium during the Olympic Opening Ceremony finale.
The Spanish-language paper El Mundo has a piece debating whether the ad was racist that basically calls out the British press for trying to smear Spain's good name. But they miss the point. Whether the picture was made in good fun is irrelevant. It was a ridiculous idea that was bound to upset a lot of people.

is taken to be a non-politically correct way, in asia, to kinda "say it like you mean"

...but in fact, its just mean.

politically correct is the extreme (and sometimes unwanted) version of: "if it isnt helpful, shut your mouth."

what a bunch of tossers. in the pic, they hardly look like they know how offensive that is.

i hate the chinese govnt and many of their brainwashed folk are just no fun to talk to. but pointing out things they cant control, like their bodies and who they are as humans, is fucking wrong. the human part is what binds us all together.

...well, in fact theyre right. the chinese can certainly claim the high ground when others make fun of who they are as humans.

its just that (i feel) we have a totally legitimate claim to say that their system is broke and full of shit. can back it up too. taking the low road erases those points, because it tells of a motivation to cut at them.

theres actually an honest argument why china sucks. agree or disagree, but its an honest argument and not hatred or fear mongering. its an honest claim based on plain-as-day evidence.

that argument however is not legitimate because they as humans look different than westerners. they are folk with dreams and desires, etc and the deligitimizing of the argument starts when we make pee-pee jokes at them.
