The website of Australia's biggest film festival was hacked into after a Chinese diplomat called to complain about the screening of a film about exiled Uighur leader Rebiya Kadeer, the BBC reported Sunday.
Melbourne International Film Festival head Richard Moore told BBC radio that the website was hacked into just after a Chinese consular official called to demand the withdrawal of a documentary film about Kadeer, who belongs to the predominantly-Muslim Uighur minority.
Content on the website was briefly replaced with the Chinese flag and anti-Kadeer slogans Saturday, he said, adding Beijing has withdrawn five films from the festival in protest.
The Chinese government accuses Kadeer, the subject of 'Ten Conditions of Love' by Australian filmmaker Jeff Daniels, of inciting riots between Uighurs and Han settlers that swept Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang province, earlier this month.
Kadeer, who lives in the US after spending six years in a Chinese jail, denies the charge.
Moore said the attacks on the festival website began about 10 days ago.
'We've been subjected to a number of these attacks and we can see behind the scenes on our website that there are hundreds, well, if not thousands, of people from outside of Australia trying to get into our website and trying to damage us,' Moore told the BBC.
'This has been going on... since obviously the call from a Chinese consular official who told me in no uncertain terms that I was urged to withdraw this particular documentary from the film festival and that I had to justify my actions in including the film in our programme,' he added.
He said police were investigating the website attacks, which appear to come from a Chinese internet address.
Big kerfuffle about this.
What the hell do the Chinese think they're up to these days.
Maybe folks should stop referring to the Chinese economic powerhouse. Seems it have gone to their balls.
Was watching this on the telly yesterday and there were a group of Chinese students actually outside the theatre protesting.
Reminicient of the bullshit that these mental midjets pulled during the Olympic torch relay.
How would a group of westerners do protesting some aspect of Chinese life in downtown Beijing
The Chinese government is really fucking out to lunch.
You'd think killing Tibetan and Uighur woman and children and committing cultural genocide on both nations would be enough to keep these assholes busy.
A non-profit message for the Chinese leader from one humble soul.
Get your fat snouts back in the rice trough and show some respects for other cultures who acually respect their citizenry.
Superb assholes really. Time for someone to put these folks back into their place.

The other things that been grating me lately is how the Beijing folks have been complaining loudly about being rebuffed by national governments when trying to take control of vital industries. They really do seem to have their noses out of joint recently. Unfortunately the Canadians and bent over and taken it up the butt.
How much foreign ownship do they allow on the mainland.
Time for China to get a good crack across the ear, as any spoilt brat deserves.
not while they own our country they cant.
we need oil nidependence #1, and then we can begin to be self reliant on other types of industries, once we have located cheapr renewable sources of energy. we outsource everything we own basically to the chinese, who have an unlimited work capacity.
don fret russ...their divide between rich and poor is staggering, and growing exponentially so. their nation has a lot of fuel to work, but its a very unstable place, seenig how their population is aging, while simultaneously a widening gap in education and use of those resources.
they will strike back when they feel theres a class ceiling (that they made) on opportunity...easy for them to blame their problems on foreigners. that is, when the lower classes get so big to the point where they cannot be controled as easily, the elites will defuse and deflect with ease...after all there is an US and THEM to create easy dichotomies.
