Police moved in on the strikers who gathered on a rocky outcrop near the Lonmin mine, about 40 miles north-west of Johannesburg. This has been quite high profile news here (Oz) and it seems to be a very complicated situation (beyond mining companies making a shitload of money exploiting cheap labour) without throwing inaccurate race politics into the mix...

In the US some nutter can kill a few and we have 100 posts. Elsewhere a platoon of sane men can slaughter 30 guys and it's equates with hohum. Nobody on this forum gives a shit. The trouble intensified over the weekend, driven by a wider feud between two unions.
Two policemen died in a machete attack by a mob near the mine; two security guards were hacked to death and a union said one of its members was killed while trying to report for duty. The body of a middle-aged man who had been bludgeoned to death could be seen in the area on Tuesday, the Associated Press reported, as several thousand miners held another protest over working conditions.
