After that we checked out the Temple of Literature. Much more serene.

Cool. Did you find the trip as a whole qualified as "extremely cheap", "cheap", "worth it", or...

Wanna get out there soon.

When I went: Cheap and worth it.

I got Air Asia tickets for $120. (Now much more.) Hotel in Hanoi near lake $18. Hotel in Ha Long Bay (4 Star) $55. Boat trip and round trip to/from Hanoi. ($100? including over night on boat or in CatBa Island)
I will PM you with the details of my trip and an inbound travel agent that arranged everything for me (and it was TET so not an easy thing to do.) Matthew, when I get the name and location of the jungle hotel in Jantaburi. LOL

Cheap and definitely worth it. It's cheaper than Thailand in some regards. A three day trip to Halong bay all food and accommodation included was $48.

Don't want to start some raging debate and I'm not having a go but I'd definitely recommend Americans to visit in particular. The whole image of the place we have in our heads comes into sharp relief, due to all the films and tv we've seen of it.

I'd get up on a cracked plate mate. A bumby bus journey gives me the horn.

Re: Hanoi and Halong Bay, July '08

The Maison Centrale was last on our tourist trail. Also known as the Hanoi Hilton. The Frogs built it I believe and the Vietnamese used it to keep POWs.

It's where John McCain was kept.

They have his flight suit on display.

He wasn't quite as tubby then.

Of course all the photos show the POWs having a great time, in good spirits, getting looked after, treated humanely, etc. etc.

The building's not that spectacular but here's a guy painting the walls of it anyway.

The part about the building's history when the French ran it is a tale of the vicious colonial oppressors and the courageous political prisoners, etc. etc. In stark contrast to the pics of the American POWs decorating Christmas trees, reading and playing basketball, laughing and generally having a grand old time. Very simplistic propaganda. Even more so than our nationalist history sites in Ireland!!

Vive la France!

You can just read the caption underneath. These heads belonged to "patriotic soldiers".

It wasn't like the bit in Deerhunter at all. Looked quite comfy actually. He was probably just glad to be out of the firing line. Hero my *ss.

I went to Vietnam once. Stayed at The Continental and The Rex, bought some t-shirts, got wrecked on 333 beer, rode around on the back of a Foster beer girl's bike, got wanked off buy a masseuse and ate some pho. Good trip.
