Hanoi and Halong Bay, July '08

Final visa run for me before leaving the kingdom (for a while at least). So she-who-must-be-obeyed and I went for a little break to Hanoi. Neither of us had ever been there before.

Hanoi is a cool little city.

There's a shrine on an island in the lake in the centre. There was an Indiana Jones moment where the light shone in on it (possibly illuminating where a mystical artifact was hidden, I didn't check).

Lots of the Vietnamese are Catholics (God help them) and they have a cool cathedral in the city.

Fairly haunting looking by night I thought.

So we headed off to Halong bay the next day. It really is stunning.

There's a huge cave complex which has been lit up and had steps put in for the tourists. Amazing stalactites and mites.

Of course they've got commie propaganda everywhere. Even on the bins and chopstick holders though!

Halong Bay looks a lot like the trip to Riley from Krabi.

You're good with the camera, robi.

Thanks.

It is a lot like Krabi, minus the beaches. Well worth a visit.

Or just watch Tomorrow Never Dies if you can't make it.

Re: Hanoi and Halong Bay, July '08

Well basically I was sitting down with her to eat in a tourist restaurant, the first evening we arrived. I was sporting my Napalm Death "Scum" t-shirt as is my wont on accasion. Some bird taps me on the shoulder, pretty aggressively. "Excuse me" (stupid southern English accent) "I think that you shouldn't be wearing that t-shirt here. Do you know what these people have been through? I mean it says Napalm Death Scum. Far be it from me to tell you what to wear...blah, blah, blah." She was obviously nervous about approaching me and seemed shaken while she was speaking. When she finished her diatribe I said "thanks for the tip" and went back to my meal.

Meanwhile all around the city road Rambo 2 is on sale for the foreigners enjoyment. She obviously hadn't got much experience with Asia. There's always one. Doubtless a do-gooding Bono supporter.

Re: Hanoi and Halong Bay, July '08

After Halong bay we went back to Hanoi and checked out Uncle Ho.

Click the image to open in full size.

No cameras allowed of course, but here's his mausoleum. He looked more like a waxwork to me personally.

After that we went to the war museum. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's basically a glorification of the war and propaganda.

They'd formed a kind of sculpture of shot down French and American planes.

You been there M?

It was impressive looking but I thought it was kind of sickening overall to be honest.
