For those people reading this thread that want to eventually get their masters but haven't got their bachelors yet.

I think if you are looking for a regular level job that an online degree from a place that is clearly not a diploma mill is sufficient in 2010. If you are looking for a higher level job or particularly a scholarly type job it may not be sufficient.

When the recognized richest man in the world built THE most successful tech company in the world doesn't even have a degree then I think the rest of the world needs to get their heads out of their asses about degrees and focus on performance. If the world focused on performance maybe major companies won't hire those dumbass bankers and financial people that caused the world so many problems.

I'm attending the Missouri University Direct (Mizzou) for my MEd in Curriculum & Instruction TESOL. I was going to do Literacy, but switched my focus to TESOL. They offer others as well and the Uni was recommended by one of my Professors from the University of Maryland where I got my BA in English Lit. He also recommended UMass, but it was much more expensive and the only MEd they offered that interested me was Linguistics. They are worth checking out at http://www.mudirect.missouri.edu/degprog/_masters.shtm

It's like a garden full of snow,
And when the snow begins to fall
It's like a bird upon the wall,
And when the bird away does fly
It's like an eagle in the sky,

And when the sky begins to roar
It's like a lion at the door,
And when the door begins to crack
It's like a stick across your back,
And when your back begins to smart
It's like a penknife in your heart,
And when your heart begins to bleed
You're dead, and dead, and dead -- indeed.

Sorry but this is a little bit confusing. When you say you "are attending" what you mean is this is a distance learning course, right? So...you are not exactly attending in the real physical sense of the word is that right? I only worked this out cos your location says Udon Thani.

I am also confused as to what this has to do with the discussion about MAs in Thailand as you haven't offered any analysis or parallels with courses here?? Or am I missing something? Sorry, not trying to be deliberately rude - just want to know what your meaning is.

Yes I am attending in an "online" sense, but it is still attending.

I was replying to a post in which the person said they would look at home then and see what opportunities there were, so I merely pointed out a couple of options that were recommended to me to be helpful and polite.

sorry but it's customary to use the quote feature for this purpose. No harm done.

I think if you are genuinely settled in Thailand i.e. have lived here for years and are married and financially secure enough to rely on teaching in Thailand to provide for comfortable working years and retirement. A Thai M.A would be a good move if the cost (financial) and time spent are outweighed by the monetary rewards. However if you are not really, really settled in Thailand and teaching in Thailand for the long haul I’d look at other options very carefully. Some Thai degree programmes may be the tits but Thai degrees don’t travel well. Caveat emptor.

Here is a quick copy and paste of an email I just received from another graduate from ABAC and should dispel all the myths about whether Thai degrees are accepted abroad or not.

    Hi Alumni and near-alumni,

I graduated with a Masters from ABAC about a year ago and now I'm in the process of applying for a teacher's license in the USA.

One of the criteria for obtaining a US teacher's license from most states is to have graduated from a valid teacher's education program which is accredited from a regional accreditation agency. Since my ABAC degree isn't accredited in the USA, I used a credential evaluation service which is recognized by most states.

The good news is that ABAC passed the evaluation and should be recognized by most states and universities in the USA. Basically, they said "In summary, it is the judgment of the Foundation that *name removed* has the equivalent of a Master of Education (M.Ed) degree in curriculum and instruction from a regionally accredited college or university in the United States."

I thought this information and process should be of interest to anyone who needs a way to validate their ABAC experience to universities or employers outside of Thailand.

I do know that an ABAC Masters in Education is accepted in New Zealand and Australia as a teaching qualification, I think it's been also validated in Ireland but not yet in the UK as nobody has submitted everything to NARIC yet to get it done although in my informal phone calls with them, in the UK they said they thought it would be equivalent to a BEd but that is only an informal opinion from NARIC as yet.

Make of that what you will but that's the evidence....

I checked with NARIC. They do recognise the award from ABAC as legit in the UK, but it's not enough to be recognised by the teaching councils in Ireland or the UK. To be recognised by the teaching councils in those countries you need to have the PGCE or equivalent. There's no way around that.

Good news on it getting recognised by the seppos though.

NARIC said that the MEd from ABAC is equivalent to a BEd from the UK but as nobody has actually confirmed this yet by submitting all the documentation, we will have to wait and see. That should be enough to get you working as an Unqualified Teacher in the UK where you can put in the hours to obtain QTS at the very least.

I have. I told you that already.

To get recognised in Paddyland and QTS in the UK for secondary, you need to be trained in your subject area. The ABAC degree don't do that none.

Yes I know that but you can use it apparently to bypass the theoretical part of the PGCE or use it to enable you to acquire your QTS via another route.....

It might count towards part of the PGCE. That may be true. But it would not replace it. At least I would doubt it very much. You'd still have to do the PGCE in some shape or form. But I don't know exactly. I'm just going on my experience.

Anyway, what do I care? I've got the bits of paper. N.M.P. anymore.
