Uk or Thailand???
Say you're in my boots, you've got a Thai wife, a 8 month old baby and a great job (not a great salary ) and living in Thailand.
Would you want your kid to grow up and go to school here (Thailand)? or
Would you want your kid to grow up and go to school in England?
What can you say are the Advantages or Disadvantages of either?

Re: Uk or England???
How open is your wife to the idea of living in England?

Re: Uk or England???
Err..shouldn't the thread title be 'UK or Thailand?
Jeez ...it's a pretty pizz poor choice, imo.
Hopefully I would have been sensible and got a cushy International School job in Thailand before even considering reproduction.
Ads of England
An education system worthy of the name.
Ads of Growing Up In Thailand
Pretty much everything else - if you can afford it.

Re: Uk or England???
Neither appeal to me 10 years from now, as a father of an 11 month old in BKK.
UK often seems so breed chavs, and LOS lazy dullards. Of course, with good parenting, hopefully these fates can be avoided. Aging One, for example, seems to be doing a sterling job of raising his girls here.
Thinking of trying China or Taiwan in 5 years time. Dunno how feasible tis though - bitta reading to do!

Re: Uk or England???
The good news is that you have about 7 years before educational needs really kick in, right?
So how about 7 years in LoS whilst you work on a better answer?
Anyways, it also depends on how feasible the options other than Thailand are, of course.
Getting a decent salary improves the options.

That's very much what I'm banking on!

Re: Uk or England???
Well I'm kinda half in your shoes - Thai wife planning to have a family - and it's a dilemma I have pondered.
UK
Pros
Better education in theory - although there are lots of potatoheads with 'a good education' today.
Free Healthcare.
More money.
Cons
Everything is so expensive. Family trip to the zoo £50, food in zoo £20, programme £5, etc.
Some schools really are shit. I asked my 8 GCSE nephew when WW2 was....no idea. At 14 he didn't know where chips came from!!!!! Yes, I know these are just 2 instances but, come on.
Danger of getting in with the wrong crowd when they are teenagers. I would say certainly more likely than in Thailand.
Thailand.
Pros
The great outdoors is more accessable. Certainly daily entertainment would be more beneficial and cheaper.
Thai living seems to be more family based and respectful.
Cons
Education might not be as good. Although there is no reason that with the internet they can't excel.
Money will be tighter and returning to the UK will be hard.
No free healthcare.
Those are the main reasons I came up with, but your choices will no doubt be different.
Good luck,

Re: Uk or England???
The other consideration would be access to an extended family network. Which one do you prefer? Which one would you rather remain thousands of miles away from?
I'm generally with Cyrille on this one, though my absolute preference would be life in A.N.Other European country. France or Spain would be nice.

Re: Uk or England???
Indeed. Slim pickings on the TEFL front in either country, and it's hardly much better on the international schools front, since every other bugger's had the same great idea.

True, but given the amount of time kids are at school, there's plenty of time for them to pick up dubious habits / ways of (not) thinking.
PS, how did you know my real name's Bub?

Re: Uk or Thailand???
Stay in Thailand OEG, unless you already have a bolthole in the UK. The England that I remember can be difficult to find these days. You will miss some of the simple things that, perhaps, you take for granted (like a bit of sunshine) and I would hazard a guess that your little'n would too mate.
Either side of the pond is likely to be a financial challenge as there's an international money shortage these days so, maybe ask yourself where you would like to be if you won the lottery, and then give it your best shot wherever that is.
Good luck!
