Nickyboy,
Please use this thread at your convenience (when you want) to tell us about your total Korea experience.
P.S. or hogwan?
How the night life? Food? Job? Seoul?
Enquiring minds want to know. Thanks.
Well, a lot of what I've got to say will make up the bulk of a potential column in the writer's section next month..so you'll have to wait I'm afraid.
For the record, I'm in a public school.
Hey, you could ask jimbo, Magpie, IA, Mrs Q or Stfran if you really need details immediately.
I'm everywhere you've never been and better than I've ever been
^,
So, your writing on this board in the Hot Seat? Writer's Section.
Please tell me when it's up.
Thanks, Arnie.![]()

^^ Sad to see you are leaving. You are one of the few, that seemed to have had a good experience here from what I read, from others on this board. Good luck with your PGCE.
ArnoldAre you MMM by chance? I received a PM inquiring about the same thing recently. I am no nickyboy, but I could give you a somewhat objective view of Seoul. I've been here for eighteen months.Nickyboy,

If you could be more specific in your questions, I could answer them. Either on here, or through PM.
Cheers
Phuket...some 'positive' Korean stories would be intersting.
I know Mai Kow Lope really likes it there![]()
of the people i've met who've lived and work in korea, they've either loved it or hated...no in between...
"so please show no pity as we come up from the ground, and please remember as you kill us and cut us down that time will not wash clean the bloody face of history, and someone will breathe here again and they will hate you for what you leave." m.g.
Well I was having this conversation with friends earlier this evening enjoying a few Cass beers. A lot of how you like Korea, depends on your experience here. Some people get into a bad hakwon, with crappy hours, and corrupt boss. Not all hogwans and public schools are the same. If you do your homework before you come, then you have a better chance of liking what school you are at. Sometimes, it is a crap shoot, in that it is a gamble.
Also, it depends a lot of what type of person you are. Some people are more open-minded in accepting cultures, and more flexible, and adaptable to change. It can take some time to adjust, no doubt, since it is a totally different culture than the west.
Another thing that could influence your love or hate of the country is your friends. If you make friends easily, and find a good group to hang with, then that will help. A lot of people feel very isolated here, but there is hope. As I've met some great people here.
The culture takes some getting used to. Koreans are not the friendliest bunch if you don't know them. Yes, people push here, but if you don't go with the flow, and push right back, then you'll get trampled on. It is not seen as rude to push your way into the subway. Unlike in some places in Japan, where they actually queue to get on.
I seem to have a love/hate relationship with Korea, but I've learned to accept the way things are, and not try to change them. I think that is key.
