IMO, that's the reasoning behind it . If you're motivated enough to get all the papers together and go through the process you' re less likely to do a runner.

^ Fair point. I guess it does mean you're making the effort.

about the same as in Rayong.
they'd do themselves a favor if they'd put some value on experience and look at a persons track record instead of his birthday and picture

Yeah, Korea is all about being young and Canadian. Younger, whiter and more Canadian you are, the better your prospects. Thailand isn't so discriminatory. Thailand just requests you have a pulse and are white in most instances.

    immigration stats on E2s:

15% fail to complete a year
    40% leave at 1 year
    75% gone at 2
    95% gone at 3.

As expected, hagwans (language academies) have the highest rate of runners. Universities have the lowest.

Seems a foreigner would be better off obtaining a degree from outside of Asia. Are there any American or British university branches in Thailand?

Why, Sir, you find no man, at all intellectual, who is willing to leave Thailand. No, Sir, when a man is tired of Thailand, he is tired of life; for there is in Thailand all that life can afford.

As someone who's been in Korea 3 1/2 years now..

The reason hagwons have the most runners is they 1) pay bad, 2) have the worst hours, and 3) hire newbies who don't know better.....
On the other hand, to get a job at a uni you almost certainly have to be in country already (which usually means at least a year experience here), the hours are better, and the vacation amazing (up to 5 months paid vaca per year).

As to Koreans being racist.... some of the worst I've encountered anywhere in the world. But, IMO, that has nothing to do with the requirements for an English teacher (and the teacher's degree) to be from a native English speaking country.

Doesn't have to be a Canadian. I know many Aussies, South Africans, Americans and Brits who work in Korea.
