And the law says that for new E2 (teaching) visas the interview and the visa issuance have to happen in the applicant's home country.

So, regardless of which 'they' you are referring to, you're gonna have to do this in the U.S.

So with these new rules I'm F'ed! I am going to have to accept a job prior to going. Let's say I find out it's a shitty school to work for, how easy would it (if possible) be to go to another school and use my existing WP?

Re: Seriously considering a move to Korea.....

not possible, as far as I know. Each WP (called an ARC) is only applicable to that school. Changing jobs means changing Arcs.....IE; Talk to no less than 3 crackers working at said school. Take no chances by accepting a postion where you'd be the only foreigner.

We can try to help you trav.

PM the school names to me, Stretch, PB and any other Korean posters.....(look thru the room) goo stewart is clued in. And we'll try and find out the deal....if we can.

become a poster on daves eslcafe korea forum, as painful as it can be.....you can get away with some school naming there.

I appreciate your input and offer to help. I am still considering my options.

A few other concerns I have:

1. How often can you expect raises on these contracts? are they easy to get or do you have to twist their arm?

2. What if you do not like your living arrangements under the contract? Would it be possible to move and have the funds the school is paying for the original place directed to a place of your liking? As long as it's reasonable I have no worries by the way.

Thanks again.

1. A usual yearly increment raise is common and should be included (specifically written) into the contract. (%ages vary)

2. Yes, it is usually possible, but again should be explicitly written into the contract.

Standard rule of thumb is to insist such things be written into the contract. And to double-check them with existing employees.

While this is now impossible it will be possible beginning in December. The Korean government aannounced this last Thursday and I read about it in the Korea Herald.

You can also check out the school before signing by going to the Hogwan Recruiter Bitchfest thread on expatkorea.com

Re: Seriously considering a move to Korea.....

I am also curious if the new rules are being implemented. I am going back to Canada first because, I know that I will have to get official transcripts, and a notarized or original degree. Also a physical examination will be needed. At least that is what I had to do last year. This year may be different, but I will find out soon enough. The recruiter or school will tell you what is needed.

That is where things COULD get hairy, especially from out of country.

My school is established, has 9 chains, never misses a payday, etc...etc.. but they have no fucking idea how to deal with this nightmare. I can hardly blame them. SO much double-talk going on. PS: Each and every US state has a different story RE: Criminal Background Check procedures.

Not really my school's fault. Admin. sometimes pretend to 'know' what is happening, but in the end, often the burden ultmately falls on the teacher.

Another problem though is that contracts aren't always followed to the tee either. Especially with language schools. Beware! I've had my boss ask me to change my contract mid-contract. I said no, and thankfully he obliged. Employers don't always see the contract as binding, and I've had a few friends get royally screwed. That is where it is important to research the school before you go. Public schools most often than not, do follow the contract.

Right andf right.

Fortunately nowadays EFL LAW works!! At first sign of contract breach....contact them (or threaten to) and watch the schools "idea" fade away....

I'd think anyone who has lived in Asia for a spell would have figured out one's word is more honourable than a piece of paper.

Re: Seriously considering a move to Korea.....

That isn't always true either. Depending on how serious the breach is..I've known many friends who have complained, and nothing has been done. That's another whole story anway. I think it is a gamble in a sense, on the school you choose. You can make it less likely to happen by knowing what you get into. Sometimes that isn't always plausible if you're out of the country. Even if you think you know, when you arrive things aren't as they seem. I've seen it happen. I don't mean to scare people or be negative, but that is the way it is. An adventure, as I see it. Just be smart, and look into things as much as possible.

Exactly why I had my previous employer tattoo some of the contract highlights on my back. Hope that holds up in court come bonus time.

Re: Seriously considering a move to Korea.....

Seems from what has been said here that these new regulations still need to be finalized.

I just do not want to get caught in any snags. For example, discovering my school work environment sucks (despite checking with contacts/former teachers, etc.) and can't use my existing wp elsewhere.
