Yes, Americans and Canadians get it back. The Brits don't, as far as I've been told.

Correct. I just got mine back (American). To put it in perspective, for the month of February, I got paid:
2.3 million (salary)
2.3 million (bonus)
2.2 million (pension)
800,000 (flight money)
Not too bad for one month's work. And they let me go back home early. I only worked about 10 days in February.

Re: Seriously considering a move to Korea.....
Does anyone here teach at a uni in Korea? If so, does your uni have a SE asian studies department? Are there any Thais teaching in the department, and what are their quals? Do they have an MA or PhD?
I'm considering a move to Korea, but will only go if my wife would also be able to work. She's got an MA in linguistics from arguably the best uni in BKK with related experience, and we were hoping that a uni in Korea would hire her. I know that Korean unis will hire westerners with only an MA, but am wondering if this also transfers to teachers from asian countries.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Seriously considering a move to Korea.....
^ I really am not aware of Uni's hiring Thai's. I've never heard of it happening, but it may be a possibility. I can try and find out.. Have you looked on Davescafe for more information? If you email the universities that you are interested in working for, they may be able to answer your questions.

Yes, not bad at all. I can relate. A nice chunk of money for travelling.
Are you going to continue teaching in Korea, or did you apply for the International schools you were talking about previously?

Re: Seriously considering a move to Korea.....
Here's a list of unis in Korea: http://www.duke.edu/~myhan/c_blku.html
You may have your researching cut out for you, tho some have immed. links.
I'm pretty sure number 40: Korea Foreign Language University has a Thai dept. I've heard of others but can't remember which ones right now.

Re: Seriously considering a move to Korea.....
Thanks Phuketbound and Jimbo.
Yes, it does seem like a considerable amount of research and emailing will be necessary. If either of you happen to come across any additional information, I'd be most appreciative.
A few years back I spent a year working in Korea, and while I certainly didn't love it, I found it to be manageable. I had a colleague, however, whose wife was not working and she was miserable...so in some ways he was too. I really don't want to put my wife in that type of situation, so our going to Korea is dependant on her having a job. If we decide to move to a country where I'll be working and she won't, it'll definitely be in the ME---because I might as well be getting paid as much as possible.

I don't know if they will, but I have a list of Korean universities that have English teacher training departments. Most of them will have the postings on the first page and will begin advertising for September openings in the next few weeks. PM me for details, I've tried to post it, but there appears to be a script saving problem.

Hanguk U. of Foreign Studies, Busan U. of Foreign Studies, and Jinju U. of Foreign Studies are the only ones I could possibly imagine having and teaching positions for Thais. Apparently HUFS even has a Thai website: Hankuk University of Foreign Studies
-----
Hankuk University of Foreign Studies
Ah, so they do offer Thai. You'll notice that the largest and most prestigious foreign studies university in Korea has a grand total of one Thai faculty member.

Re: Seriously considering a move to Korea.....
My Thai gf (fiancee) got a place at the uni in Ulsan, she was doing sport psychology though. She has a PhD in her subject area. Her English is up to par as well. They do hire experts from other countries, I know several from different countries. She didnt get a great deal of cash, but she got the same as her Korean counterparts.
