TTD and I shared a few PMs on this topic. Here's another (slightly different) version than what I sent him for the benefit of this thread.
Have any of you gone to work in Korea accompanied by your Thai spouse?
Took my Thai wife to Saudi for 2 years and am now in Korea with my Thai fiancee' (about 6 mos now) She will enroll at a local uni. soon and study the Kor language to satisfy her visa reqs...later (hopefully) will transfer to Kor Biz visa status.
How did he/she adapt to life there?
She's doing pretty well these days, but it was a little rough the first 2 months. I made one rule. She must leave the home once a day minimum. (fresh air, O2 and all that)
Did all the free time drive them insane?
She keeps busy enough with MSNing,...playing housewife (at two apts.), shopping, trying to get a small biz off the ground, ordering thai ingredients (kor website), cooking KILLER thai meals, and unlimited entertainment options....thai tv, movies, etc...
Did it eventually do harm to your relationship?
As I said, we've had some ups and downs but I feel most of that is behind us (some certainly due to other extenuating circumstances that some of you know about
Any comments on racism/xenophobia directed towards dark skinned Thais?
She isn't VERY dark, and I'd say 75% of the Koreans she encounters can see right off that she isn't of their race. (the other 25% try to engage in Korean with her). Of the Kors that she needs to do business with, get served by, etc....I'd say that most of the interaction has to do with them "wanting an international friend." Thus far she has politely declined.
I make her play it VERY safe, as most of us know korean guys get a bit out of control and i do have this fear-driven fantasy of her popping off to the loo and being grabbed by some drunken a-hole who has fond memories of his last "biz trip" to phattaya.
One thing I've learned (maybe obvious) about taking your Thai lady abroad is,...."Get them home MINIMUM once per year. Not true for ALL, of course. Some thai chickies travel and adapt quite well, but it doesn't seem to be the norm...and I'll admit it, Korea is NOT for everyone and is also not the easiest nut to crack.
