Caught on (F series): fined.

This is what I wandered about. The difference being caught with having two different visas. I don't think many people that do have privates talk too much about it in public anyway.

"The difference being caught with having two different visas."
I'm not sure I understand that.

And I don't think any Korean immigration officers are going to get too hot and bothered about what some anonymous posters wrote on an internet forum.

Re: Privates,...worth the risk?
I get your point. Just testing you.
I was doing some privates last year, and at one point I had about five different ones. It was good while it lasted.
I think it is hard to get them, but them word of mouth spreads fast, especially if they have friends in the same apt. complex. You can make around 40 - 50,000 won/hr.. perhaps more in Gangnam area. I think they could be worth the risk as long as you don't talk about them much.

Re: Privates,...worth the risk?
^I charged around 40,000 an hour in Busan. And you're right -- best not to tell anyone, even your friends. The key to privates is to be a rock star on your very first one and then word of mouth will spread and you'll get more. It's all about networking.

What is expected of an instructor during a private vs the classroom...hypothetically speaking of course ? I've heard they mostly take place over dinner and I can't see whipping out a verb chart at a restaurant table.

Re: Privates,...worth the risk?
Yes. Can't accomplish much at a cafe or restaurant. But it's bread and butter to get paid for having a meal and conversing.
The serious students want lessons in their home.
If you can get them to buy a text-book than you just lightened your load. If not, the pressure is on you to prepare for each and every lesson and (sort of) develop a curriculum as you go....check-up tests, etc...
I charge more for the latter.

Re: Privates,...worth the risk?
I'm sure this is a totally taboo question; but, what the hell.... I'll be in Korea in about three weeks and have been wondering how a teacher goes about getting privates. Does someone just come up and ask you? I've read throught the threads that say you get most of your students through word of mouth, but how do you get the first?
Hypothetically.

I knew a couple that attended a large number of churches in their area in order to build up their private stock.
Some cherry-pick students from their places of work.
Others get offers from adult students (at their place of work) for their children. (moi)
A few go straight into places of business (large companies) and offer their services directly.
Still others shop on work and play dot com.
The list does go on.....

Re: Privates,...worth the risk?
Often old students you taught years before ring you up. I am getting ready to start 4 hours a week at a private company 5 minutes from my university. Kid remembered me and called and offered 1500 an hour on a 60 hour contract to teach 8 of them. 4 hours a week for 15 weeks to start soon.

A lot of what is expected depends entirely on who you are teaching. What their needs are? Your student could be a child who's parent wants you to do a little bit of phonics, math, science, or English. It could be an adult who wants to learn business English. It could be just conversational English. I've done all of the above depending on the target age group, and their needs.
I've met people in their home, and mine.
I've met people at a restaurant, and a coffee place. Depends entirely what is best for both of you.
Networking and keeping an ear out, is the best way to get privates, as well as everything else that has been listed on here.

Re: Privates,...worth the risk?
Getting privates is probably the easiest thing I've done whilst living in Korea. Autumn, if you really wanna know how, then pm me.

Re: Privates,...worth the risk?
^ Are you in a big city? I'm sure it is a different experience getting privates, for someone who is living in a smaller city. Do you have a secret you'd like to share?
A lot of how easy you get privates depends on a myriad of factors ime.
