It seems there are not a lot of foreigners teaching in Indonesia, to judge by the dates in this thread. I am teaching in Malang, Jawa. It is not Jakarta or even Surabaya. I think Malang is a fairly large town (not city), but the everyday living is definitely the village lifestyle. Posting here after surviving 3 months of employment. Available to answer questions in a very limited range (like, don't ask me about Jakarta.... I don't even fly into the airport there).
whats the pay/cost of living like? locals friendly?
After a few years teaching in Thailand I'm off to an IB school in Jakarta this summer (two year contract). Prices look a little higher than Bangkok and from my previous visit to Jakarta I'm not expecting the nightlife to be on par, but thought the experience will do my career good and get my foot into the International school circuit door.
I'll let you know how I get on!![]()
Yes, yes, yes... yes... yes... yes - Cake?
After a few months here I am finding the cost of living higher than Thailand.
Finding living in Jakarta a drag. Having to travel to 'areas' in order to enjoy any kind of social life. No where close to where I live in the west can I have a beer with my meal etc. That's not too bad actually as I haven't found a beer that I like here yet...
People are fine and school and students are great.
I'm earning about 78,000 baht (equivalent) and saving around 40,000 a month, but am not living it up, in fact am thinking of joining the monkhood!!!![]()
Hey all,
I actually did a search on Indonesia and ran across this thread.
I'm not teaching here at the moment but staying here for a month or two on holidays and to be near my girl.
Some info and current prices.
Basically, my room in South Jakarta is about 5 million rupiah per month, is big and comfortable, and has internet (medium speed), and satellite (maybe 30 channels). [I also get free daily laundry-about 4 pieces, not including small things like socks or underwear). The other prices/value are also pretty good.
You can grab lattes here from 17,000-33,000 rupiah, large size, and I often eat 6 nuggets and 2 pieces of chicken at McDonalds for 45, 000 rupiah, and grab cheap beers at the 7-11 as low as 15,000 rupiah (+/-) and drink them outside (Indonesian brands).
Also, lately I have been grabbing sio may (chinese dumplings) covered in peanut sauce on the street for 1000 rupiah each. I ate 14 my first time (two bowls full) and was absolutely stuffed!
I also found a massage place yesterday for 60,000 rupiah for 90 minutes. Motorcyle taxis seem to start at about 10,000 rupiah and I found a gym for 1,000,000 rupiah per month, based on straight 1 month rate-much cheaper if buying 3 month, 6 month, 1 year, ect.
The gym has state of the art equiptment, a sauna, steam room, and a swimming pool. It's like a little country club.
I also priced a round trip ticket to Bali for 1,000,000 rupiah (Air Asia) and my girl found me a guy who will unlock my iphone for 75,000 rupiah.
And I will echo some above observations on Jakarta that it just seems very "normal". There seems to be very little flash or buzz, and Jakartans seem very friendly but sometimes a bit dim. Not as dim as Thais though.
And I will add that I have limited exposure to Jakarta, thus far, so take some of my observations with that in mind.
The only "nightlife" I experienced here so far was a visit to the "infamous" Blok M, which I thought was filled with the most broken down whore imaginable. Some of them were literally on par with the street girls in Cebu that I saw when last on visit there....
And I don't know about the pay scale for university jobs or international schools. If anyone has any info on that I would be interested.
It is very unlikely that I would live or work here, but I am an information "pack rat", so it never hurts to know these things...
