Thinking about taking a working holiday in the states this year. Anyone out there know how I can get a green card and visa for my Thai girlfriend? Being a lazy bastard, I figure marrying her would be the easiest way, but also being a normal bastard, I don't much like that option.

Ya dont get the green card. You get a non immigrant or residence visa for her, then she begins the green card stuff in the states. Its not going to be easy with the attitude you have. Sorry to be blunt but its true.

I'm going to guess that the greencard paperwork is long winded. I'm looking to do some short term work for a friend of mine, but the girlfriend has to be legal so she can work as well.
The time frame really influences when I leave LOS, or if I bother going at all.

It looks like a work permit is the thing I am looking for, as I'm not entirely sure if I want to remain in the states. The green card is for long term aliens. There seems to be a fiance visa, in which the gf could get a work permit.

The fiancee visa (K-1) allows entry for 90 days. True, you can get a temp work permit but that will also expire when the 90 days are up. You MUST be married within that time or they will have to leave. No extensions on that visa. Good news is that once married, you can apply within the USA for marriage green card and be allowed to work during the application time (usually around 18 months-3 year on average)Originally Posted by loki
Lots of other criteria. Have to have met personally, the applicant will be interviewed at the local overseas consulate, embassy where they will be asked trick questions. They will want to see some sort of proof that marriage plans are in hand.
You will have to sponsor the applicant and show you have funds etc.
As a bit of trivia, my green card (2001) was actually blue.
Better off with a tourist visa (no work permit). Not much work here for Thais anyway except for thai restaurants and they hire illegals all the time so no worry. good luck

When we came back here (usa) my wife got her immigrant visa, entered the USA on that and then they took the packet at JFK airport immigration, and a few weeks later her green card came in the mail. basically it is her ID card, or permanent resident card. its her green card as well. then you go and get a social security number. easy.
When she comes and goes to the usa she goes thru the line with me for citizens.
