Anyway sad story....but imo Tefling in Thailand long term is for those who want to stay and enjoy life for 1-2-3 years....or for those who are already financially secure. In my three years of living in Thailand I never once returned home (due to the cost). However since moving to Korea (a year and a half ago)....I've been back home twice (once for three months)...been on 5 vacations to Thailand........got enough money to get married......and have managed to put more away in the bank than I would gross in Thailand in a year and a half of working, including doing privates. Not bragging at all......just relaying my own experiences.
That should wind the gang up a little, good work.

Thailand does offer such delightful bonuses but only if your related to the king. wasn't there once a teacher who claimed he was related to the royal family through marriage?

I know I found it tough....just don't do electricity and gas switching.
The problem as I see it and no offence meant AYM is that if you last worked in the UK in 66 and assuming you were 18 then you must ipso facto be approaching retirement age now, At best I would put you at 64 possibly older. Few employers are going to look at you for anything more than a bag filler on a tesco checkout. Mu suggestion would be to get full on onto the benefits bandwagon, I know that I for one would rather see you get the bennies than some 18 yr old half life or an armenian economic migrant.

I get nice bonuses like work for 1500 baht an hour for 9 hours a month that have nothing to do with the king. Stay in Bangladesh or India Jonah, too much temptation for you here with the over the counter chemists and all.

Excellent post and very true! If you want to stay long term in Thailand and teach you need to have PGCE or Masters to earn enough money to have a quality of life we all want and deserve.

No you dont you have to persevere and find the good jobs. Dont settle for less. When you find a good one stay and get the increases. Then find the best outside gig you can to supplement it. I make over 2500 a month in usd every month and have for a long while. At 21 hours a week.

Yeah, it's not pleasant at all, the drop in won. Luckily I'd already sent quite a chunk of cash outisde of Korea while the rate was $1 US = 1,000 won. Right now it's fluctuating anywhere from 1250-1400 won to the dollar. I'm not sending money out of here until such time as things improve (hopefully ). That said...even with today's current dire exchange rates, I'm still saving minimum of $3,000 US per month.

So, it's a bitter pill to swallow and a big loss but I feel it's definitely still worth me being here.

That's how my illnes began with illusive comments on how much I was making and how great my life was when it wasn't. You mentioned above about over the counter meds oldman. How do you know about such things?

Do you think commenting about another member in this way is a nice way to be involved in a forum's active posting?

It's a real shame you have to comment on drugs in this way oldman. A teacher shouldn't drink on a teaching day but many do, before breakfast too. I haven 't mentioned anyone in particular.

your insults are directed staight at me and have been for a couple of years.

Are you in love with me but can't admit it?

Thought I better answer the "you are 64" poster.
I left the UK, having worked very hard, sucking breast for meals. I was 4. I am now 46. Kidding. I stopped sucking breasts when I was 3 1/2. lol

All I can say is, bad planning on my part and extremely bad luck, what with the economy and suck.
Most of my funds earned in Thailand, as most of you who know me know, was teaching Korean and Japanese expats and their children.

After the clowns shut the Phuket airport down for 2 days, most of my clients went home, fed up with the place. As of yesterday, some of my best students have left and will never go back to Thailand.

Go to Korea, they say. Feck me, like jumping from one xenophobic nation to another. Hell, for my son, I will do anything. Currently on davesesl looking at stuff.

Hang in there AYM. It gets better, but it'll take time.

Once you get a foot in the door, it'll be easy to work your way up and get more cash.

It's a long shot, but could her instant dismissal of you and nasty attitude towards you, be her kicking the dog?
Maybe her response to the UK's cancellation of Thaksin's visa. Is she Thai? Pro-Thaksin?
Is there a possibility she could have seen your avatar?

I'm not sure how he equated your post with his situation, but maybe he feels you control his life somehow

I think that's how you've construed the comment Jonah, I don't think AO was trying to make any kind of illusive comment. We've probably all fallen on bad times before and as bad as they may seem, keeping a positive attitude and focusing on your goal (in this case procuring a paying job) is the best way to get through times like these.

I'd say in your case it was an educated guess. But with every new post it's becoming less educated and more plainly obvious.
"We're all very different people. We're not Watusi, we're not Spartans, we're Americans. With a capital "A", huh? And you know what that means? Do you? That means that our forefathers were kicked out of every decent country in the world. We are the wretched refuse. We're the underdog. We're mutts."

Sorry to hear this, ajarnyaimak. I hope things progress for you. In the meantime, keep your chin up, ya hear. Did all your Korean students in Phuket go back to Korea? If you decided to come here, let me know, huh. Lots of jobs here, but I understand if you don't wnat to go from Thailand to here.
