Teaching in Malaysia or Laos.......

I am curious to know if anyone here has ever taught in Malaysia or Laos.

Yes, this may be a possibility for me. I enjoyed Penang that much! Also I like Laos alot too. It would be a nice change for me.

I am aware that Laos seems to have an underground "Teaching Market". Seems to me I have to go knocking on doors to get a job here.

Also, Malaysia seems like they want to hire teachers that have official credentials (which I do not have). I have also heard that Malaysian schools tend to prefer hiring their own people since their English is just as good as ours and they cost less than foreigners.

What do you people know about the teaching scenes in these countries?

Thanks

:chug:

What credentials don't you have? B.A.? TEFL Cert.? That's all you're likely to need.

Methinks you a bit too vague on this point to be getting specific information in return.

The international schools employ native English speaking teachers but you need to have both experience and teaching credentials from your home country.

The same applies to Hong Kong where, under the government run NET scheme, you can expect a salary of US$2,000 to $5,000 per month e.g.,

The salary scale is from around HK$16,165 to HK$36,575 (approx. US$2,077 to 4,700) per month (12 months a year). Candidates with a Post-graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) or equivalent (not TEFL/TESL) qualifications) will enter at HK$18,010 (approx. US$2,314) per month.

Re: Teaching in Malaysia or Laos.......

In Malaysia, if you work at a language school as opposed to a public school you can expect around 4,000 ringgit a month for salary. Few places offer housing, you normally pay for your own work permit (RM400 for two years). The cost of living is a bit higher, especially if you drink.

The Malaysian government is acutely aware that their teachers in the rural schools have zip for language so you might find something there, but salaries are low.

I know nothing about working in Laos
