Not Teaching In Thailand Life beyond teaching in Thailand, whether still living in LOS and making a living by other means, or living in another country, teaching or otherwise. Plus the practicalities of visas and migration there.

Re: What's going on in China?
In China you get a government trained officer/spy who's job it is to control you from doing the forbidden things ( fun and actually teaching)
Another country where you sign on to teach 16 classes and the next day your teaching 24 with no extra money ...in fact they found ways to take money off you

Re: What's going on in China?
Man this just wasn't my experience at all. I suppose there is good and bad luck though. I was sent to a lower quality hospital in Chaoyang at 3 ish am with some sort of heart problem. I thought I would die. They fixed me up, no Chinese medicine to be seen.

Met some Han Chinese exchange students here (taught them on my old uni's international program).
Lovely girls - very friendly, down to earth and hard-working. Found them a pleasure to teach and still keep in touch.
Course they may be a glaring exception?

I know. My wife's grandparent were from the Dow joo community (spelling?) that most Chingers in Thailand come from

Medicine was very difficult for me. They have their own names for drugs. Even with an interpreter I couldn't get what I wanted, except vitamin C. Even aspirins aren't called aspirins, or even ASA (the main component).

At a top Military Hospital the Doctors were shoving penicillin into me ...Me asking what it was ...them telling me it wasn't penicillin ....Me telling them quiet clearly that I'm allergic to penicillin....Them saying it's not and is OK ....Me finding out that it was indeed penicillin CUNTS

Re: What's going on in China?
I was fine. They took care of me and I just got back out of the Dr. here in the states. I have what is called "zao bo" in Chinese. It is an irregular heartbeat, or "early/irregular heartbeat" in the Chinese. My Docs in the states agreed with their diagnosis, but I did have to translate the notes. I saved all of the charts and xrays and test results and such, to show them, which helped a lot.
I mean I just had a really good time there with little problems with anything. Medicine IS a bit of a challenge, but I'm sure you had a dictionary. I can't imagine where you would need something you couldn't get at a drug store as they carry western medicine... I bought Tylenol

Re: What's going on in China?
I don't know what you are all on about regarding health care in China. In the major cities, getting health care isn't a problem.
Living in China is boring, agreed. But the money you get paid and the housing is great! Way better than anything I have seen in Thailand. A salary of over 10,000RMB per month is good. Plus, you can work a second part-time job and earn an extra 3-4,000RMB per month. If you have a brain in your head and a degree, you won't have trouble finding a high paying teaching job.
Entertainment is lacking...they need to improve this if they hope to attract more foreigners. At the end of the day, the money here is much better than in Thailand and the work is pretty brainless and easy compared to teaching in an EP in Thailand. Plus, if you land a job at an international school...shit...the package will be amazing and the holidays will equal out to about 3 1/2 months per year (paid...no bullshit attached).
The main problem people, including myself, have with China is the government. The banking system here is shite. On average you'll need to wait about 30-45 minutes to get to the window...then at the window it will take at least 10 minutes....not having a passport might cause delays as well....plus you cannot legally exchange money here easily...very difficult to buy US$....unless you have connections to the blackmarket...or go to HK or Macau. This is one thing that really annoys me. Even to buy travellers cheques...takes over an hour...just did it a month ago...took forever...
Overall, the place is quite shitty compared to other asian countries...it's even shittier if you are stuck in the sticks...but the money and lifestyle are pretty decent...better than Thailand. If you can work hard for the semester you will have enough cash to travel basically anywhere...especially in southeast asia...
Oh, and...the Cantonese are part of the Han Chinese...no?
