Not Teaching In Thailand Life beyond teaching in Thailand, whether still living in LOS and making a living by other means, or living in another country, teaching or otherwise. Plus the practicalities of visas and migration there.

What's going on in China?
Saw this on another website. Looks like things in China may be interesting:
Quote:
130 ESL Teachers urgently needed!
You are just required to teach oral English to the students of either elementary schools, junior schools, high school or universities. You shall be required to teach 16 hours/week. You could commit from 3 months to 12 months.
As long as you are a native speaker of English, having an education beyond high school (certainly BA degree/or equivalent most prefered), having a sound health condition, over 20 and under 65 years old, and with an integrity, strong responsibility and reliability, you are more than qualified to get one of the most attractive position in China
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS 4,000 RMB/Month salary minimum for teaching of 12 real hours/week and additional payment (60 RMB) for each extra class Fully furnished and comfortable apartment with computer and free internet USD 800 for round-trip airfare Medical insurance Paid Holiday Holiday Allowance Work Visa and Residential Permit
|
I was very happy to see that you only need to be a native speaking high school graduate to qualify. And people always talk about the situation in Thailand!

If you go to google you can type in "china forums" and "china EFL forums."
Are things interesting in China? That depends on your preferences.
The China EFL market will be busy after you and I are dead.

I received some inside info from our school in CHina that the new requirements to work in China will be BA AND two years experience! This will be a huge problem for schools there.

That will rule out 90% of that market. Doubt they impose that.

But is the pay mentioned decent? Is it possible to live comfortably on what, 4000 RMB a month?

You may be right but they have gotten to the stage where new visa applications have already been printed!
A common complaint in cities in China that do not have many westerners is that there is nowhee to spend their money!
Places like Shanghai pay much more.

The market's a lot tighter in bigger cities (eg: Shanghai, Beijing), but its still the world's easiest place to get work. The good news is that of your 500USD a month salary, if you're living in some squat rural craphole, you'll only be able to spend 100 of it.
And have the shits every day. And put up with the Chinese.

Re: What's going on in China?
4,000 RMB a month is shit in China. I had an offer of 14,000RMB when I was first starting out. It's a large amount for a starting offer, but 4,000RMB isn't worth getting out of bed in the morning. No wonder they are so desperate to fill the positions.

Shit wages. Cap is right. This is only 19,602.61 THB a month.
I won't even think about a Chinese job unless it's at least 13,000RMB/month, plus housing, airfare and assorted benefits. For that they work you like a dog. It's just not worth it.

Re: What's going on in China?
Granted that was almost 3 1/2 years past.
Saying that, you couldn't get me to CHina to teach in chains!

4 000 Chinese yuan = 585.73600 U.S. dollars
I had an offer of 14,000 and still considered it to be too low.

Re: What's going on in China?
Or...not.
I loved teaching there. I had an outstandingly well furnished apartment, for 2,800 RMB a month (2 bedroom, bath, full living room/kitchen/dining room/balcony/plant room, fully furnished with 46" 1080P HDtv, etc) in Chaoyang district of Beijing, which is nice and offers easy commute to just about anywhere you would need to go. I made more than enough to support myself and my fiance', and to live a pretty damn nice life if I do say so myself. There is always work, and if you are not a complete nationalist pig and you give them a chance, most Chinese will treat you exceptionally well. Learn some Chinese, quote Confucius and you are set.
Seriously, I do not know how foreign people walk into someone elses country expecting to be treated like kings without being able to speak a lick of their language. I have never been so well treated/respected as I was in China (this includes Thailand and Japan, mind). You can carve a great life out of it if you are willing to work a little, no doubt.
Generally for work though, if all you want is a huge wad then go to Saudi Arabia or some other country like Korea. You're not going to make a killing when you walk around drunk off your ass swearing at the "evil Chinese commies" under your breath all day, with no understanding of proper negotiating edict in the culture. i'm not being a sod, I'm just telling it like it is. A smile and a little conformity go a long way to opening up what, for me, turned out to be a wonderful and eye opening experience.
China isn't the evil read commies the media wants you to believe. It all depends on what you want from your job. If all you want is money, go somewhere else, the local economy would likely be better served without that sort of individual anyway.
