I met a guy who claimed to make a shitload of $$ playing online poker. Never heard so much degenerate gambler b.s. in my whole life. He claimed to make all this $$, then was stressing over a measly 12,000 baht/month apartment. He claimed to make a huge pile of $$ the previous year, then didn't seem to have a pot to piss in at the time I met him.

In my previous occupations I've been a California estate planning paralegal, web site designer, technical writer and office manager.

Sorry to hear about that guy...the ones to which I am referring are definitely legit and very good at the game.

You just have to be better than the average player to be a winning player.

Thought the Police had just caught people on line gambling in Pattaya, Locked them up and confiscated all their gear.
So how is on line gambling legal here ?

If you read the same stories I did then the people you are talking about were using an online service for the live feed of a dealer (baccarat I think) but betting with the shop owner locally. It might still be illegal to do it all online but not really the same thing.

(I don't think Sting and co were the ones who caught them though)

When it appears to be somewhere else and the only one who knows your location is you. Pretty hard to regulate really.

As pointed out by others the Pattaya operation was akin to slot machines in an open internet cafe. Not the same as you, the computer, behind a locked door, with a https:// and maybe some interesting software and a Master Card from the EU.

I do miss the Commerce... Playing poker, the good cheap food, all the beautiful people... I was there the night there was a shoot out at the hotel entrance... 3 bad guys (?) in their car were being chased by the CHiPs on the 10 fwy. They exited the fwy drove right up to the hotel entrance stopped and had a shoot out with the CHiPs... It was the only time I ever saw the people stop playing cards... well most of the people. It was kinda funny seeing the huge, and I mean huge Samoan (?) security guard trying to crawl under a poker table.

Re: Attempts at making money some way other than teaching: your experiences.

I'm coming back for three months ..going to do a multi million dollar deal which will enable me to do whatever it is I want without ever having a dead line or answering to anyone again .......excepting my wife who is she who must be obeyed shortened into Minister.(Love/war/sex/finance) Last one always a good excuse. But I think I would be buggered if I let my idea out with all these variables collating. So I'm just here to say ... Who wants a bribe ?

Re: Attempts at making money some way other than teaching: your experiences.

My worst effort was selling mango wood ducks and vases with a friend (the friend was doing it with me, I wasn't selling him), on ebay. As I recall we didn't receive a single bid, even after some woman from the States enquired as to the postage costs and we agreed to pay them. Ebay seems to be for people who want something for nothing, knocked off / pirated goods and maybe collectibles.

I taught for a bit and didn't really care for the environment all that much. After some shuffling around, I'm back in Thailand but making money online through a variety of methods (ever-growing it seems, but the list includes web freelancing, gambling, it/insurance consulting). Nowhere near where I want to be financially, but I'm gradually getting there.
I'd be interested in hearing about doing online business, Sam. I live part of the year in a very small village in Buriram province. As you can imagine, not much goes on here, but one thing I've noticed is almost every woman in this village (and probably every other village in Thailand) makes silk. And when I say "makes silk", I mean everything from collecting the worms, to picking the leaves.....etc..etc...As you can imagine, none of the women making silk is under any pressure to complete a particular piece, but they are very proud of their work and I imagine it's as good as any you'd find in Jim Thompson's. And the funny thing is, most of them aren't really interested in selling it. They give it to relatives, trade it, or store it.
Has anyone had any experience in selling silk? I'd be interested in hearing any stories any of you may have.

Re: Attempts at making money some way other than teaching: your experiences.

I making money by having kids. The Thai gov't pays 12,000Baht for the birth and 300Baht/month for each child until they're 6. So once I get up around 100 kids, I'll be making as much as at my job and can quit. As long as I keep having 100 kids every 6 years(not a prob), it will all work out.

Just looking for stuff on ebay I see lots of stuff from Thailand now. I can only imagine it's expats trying to make extra dollar. Some a sucess, some not.

I think most people who try this E-bay "goods from Thailand" thing are just scratching a bit of extra pocket money,

Re: Attempts at making money some way other than teaching: your experiences.

Had a mate selling the vitton bags on ebay, he actually advertised them as good fakes, sent them home to his sister, don't know exactly what went on, I think she got a letter saying they had been confiscated by customs in the u.k and this was a warning, pack it in or else. So just be careful.
