Attempts at making money some way other than teaching: your experiences.
Some love teaching. Others dread each and every day. Of those who hate it, some try other things while others just trudge along, complaining until they give up and go home, hit retirement, or die. So which one are you?
If you have tried other things, what?
I taught for a bit and didn't really care for the environment all that much. After some shuffling around, I'm back in Thailand but making money online through a variety of methods (ever-growing it seems, but the list includes web freelancing, gambling, it/insurance consulting). Nowhere near where I want to be financially, but I'm gradually getting there.

Re: Attempts at making money some way other than teaching: your experiences.
I love teaching. I've tried the admin. side of things and dreaded each day after the novelty wore off.
Now, I teach F/T, and starting a few privates....trade some stocks, small export biz. A couple more tings in the works.

Re: Attempts at making money some way other than teaching: your experiences.
Most days I enjoy teaching but don't want to do it the rest of my working life. So am looking to the future to set up a Thailand-based business that gives me at least as much money as I'm making now.

If you have other skills, why not?
Many of us changed careers to come here. These days with sites such as linkedin.com, it's easy stay in touch with your old networks and contacts. I've had folks that I worked with over 10 years ago contact me with offers of contract work, and it's been golden. Recommended!

Re: Attempts at making money some way other than teaching: your experiences.
In addition to my teaching salary, I used to bring in a bit of rental income. I did that for five years, until I had two very bad tenants in a row. They caused me so much stress that it began to affect my regular job (teaching), so I stopped renting out my place altogether. (So now I live in a place that is way too big for me!)

When I used to come over on holiday, I used to gamble with the locals at a boxing bar on the Chinese card game where you try to get 9points the best had is 3 threes. Anyway I was winning. Had unlimited funds. These guys let me play because they thought I was an easy mark. I protected my hand, have a good poker face. Was winning. Finally they decided that only locals could play. I laughed and quit (Most of the players were beer bar boxers, a snake charmer, and the like. They let me keep my winnings. I ordered them a round of beer on me.

^nah, havent played snooker in a long while.
would love to start my own poker club over in my neck of the woods but havent found too many that have a clue how to play, much less gamble. in the states, lived close to a guy who was a professional poker player (supposedly). during one stretch i dont think i slept while it was dark for over a week lol. pokers so damn addicting!

Re: Attempts at making money some way other than teaching: your experiences.
Texas Hold'em is my game. No limit. $100 buy in. You got to be pretty good to beat the rake in LA or Vegas at about $4 a hand plus the dealers tip. Love to say, "ALL IN".
But I do not play in Thailand anymore. Too much local heat.
But it is fun. Having $400 of your money in the pot. You have to vary your playing style. Avoid tells. I have a good Poker face. I used to play at the Bicycle Club in LA and the Commerce Club nearby. One guy used to give a noticeable "tingle" every time he got a hand. I and the other 2 or 3 good players would just throw our hands away. He had always made the flush or straight or Full House. Beginners could get caught.
Thankfully I was not a gambling addict. I made enough to play the game. Am single. Can walk out ahead or after I spent whatever I decided was my limit. Never had that, "I need to make back what I lost." voice roll around in my head. Never made a midnight run to the ATM for more cash. Never did the "Cash Advance" with the credit cards. But agreed that some people need to stay away. Especially people with families who hurt not only themselves but others.
One time I made my hand in Texas Holdem. (Full House I think). The other player was a young college student. I go all in with about $500. He looks at me. I tell him unemotionally to throw his hand away. He does no believe me. Calls with something like two pairs (Ace High). I pull in the money. I did not gloat. I did not feel happy about it. To me the $500 was about 9 hours of work. (LAUSD top teacher rate is about $62 an hour). It was probably a month of his wages. He had no business in that game. He could have thrown his cards away. He thought I was bluffing. I wasn't.
He left. Broke. The table is congratulating me for busting him. I looked at them and said I took no pleasure in winning all of his money. (But if I didn't he would just gamble it away anyway.)
He should have thrown the cards away. Took his money and left. But he chased a $20 or $30 dollar bet with a pot of maybe a $100 and shouldn't have. He has a gambling problem. But I was there to gamble not do social work.

I like a joint that says, "Poker in the Front. Liquor in the Rear."
Add: "Guns and Ammo Sold Here" and it'd be Redneck Heaven.
