I dont want to be a downer but unless you are a certified teacher how can you save with a wife and two kids there. I checked into a position in Dubai that would have paid me 120,000 baht a month. But it came with a one bedroom apartment. It would be 400 more for a two bedroom one. The schools were not cheap either and I have twins. Plus the cost of living was much higher. Now this was at a university.

Stayed here and it all worked out better. But probably will be leaving myself as the kids are gonna start Matayom next year. I had my kids go to Prathom and become bilingual here, but I see the teaching going down in grade 6. They never study Literature, World History, or Geography in Thailand.

Assuming that you have good qualifications, it is not too difficult to secure a job in the middle east.. UAE is probably one of the easier Arab areas to stay and has fairly lucrative contracts, but the roads are no longer paved with gold. Twenty years ago, it was a great gig, but the terrorism, anti-Americanism (which affects all non-Arab English teachers), and drop in salaries and benefits have eroded its lustre.

But, having a wife and kids in tow will almost certainly mean that you will save little (if anything). Most guys who go out there to work and save find that they have to leave the wife and kids in a cheaper country. If your wife is Thai, the discrimination that she will receive will make any discrimination that the girls from Isaan receive in Bangkok pale into insignificance.

Having said that if you're still intent on going, search the net on Dave's ESL cafe and you'll find some jobs. Should you have better qualifications, the Linguist List adverts could be more useful.

I did a short stint there last year and made good money but is was a fecked program and I left after three months. I've continually looked into other positions there but the money I make now in Korea beats the majority of positions I've seen in the UAE lately. I wouldn't take my wife and kids to Korea, though.

UAE also doesn't have a low cost of living and inflation is currently running at about 15% per year with English teaching salaries not keeping pace but fairly static over the last few years and in many cases declining as the market is glutted by lots of teachers hoping to cash in on the holy grail of teaching.

I've been looking at other MidEast destinations as well, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, etc. Most of them top out around 2,500-3,000 US. (I make more in Korea.) The better ones require a minimum of a Masters. Many don't want marrieds, but singles only. There are some good job boards in the area that you can check out.
