Re: Southern Oil Palm and Rubber Plantations

You're exactly right about the triangular pattern, that's how it is done down here. 20-25 trees seems to be the average per rai, but that depends largely on the nature of the landscape.

The money is nice but it doesn't take too long to count it at the moment but I'll need an abacus in two years time as, by my calculations, I'll be getting around 20,000 kgs of palm every three weeks.

My goodness. What a thread. I don't know where to begin...I think we're going to have to come down for a peek and talk in person. More efficient

What a nice tread indeed! It has been ages since I last logged on here. Too busy at the ice-shop.

Re: Southern Oil Palm and Rubber Plantations

How many kilos per rai are you expecting after the trees are 5-6 years old?
I've used roughly 5,000 kilos per rai per year in my expectations - nearly 240 kilos per tree per year. This is based on reading Malaysian articles and most of the info is a bit dated.
Does that amount look about right to you given your experience so far?

My wife's family's trees are nearing 3 years and starting to produce which is nice but at this age, the tree growth is mixed (some took a while to shoot up) on the plantation and I'm hoping it evens out in the next few years and starts making some good averages.

Nice to see the pod price up so much! I don't see it going down anytime soon - I'm a bit of a "peak oil" nut.

Great to see all the pictures. Surat Thani makes a great place to call home - especially with the free time your oil palm plantations will give you!

Re: Southern Oil Palm and Rubber Plantations

stacks, I was advised the I would receive 500 baht per rai every three weeks so your 5,000 baht per rai per year isn't too far off when taking into consideration soil conditions, climate, species of the oil palm trees, regularity of fertilisation and the rate of pollination that will naturally differ from plantation to plantation.

My trees are still fairly mixed in terms of development as well, some of the slower trees are now showing signs of being able to produce palm but some are still doing nothing at all. The Wife just bought a kind of hormone solution so we will apply that to those trees and see what happens.

Thanks for checking in Stacks, glad to hear that your plantations are also going well. Do you have any photos? I'd love to see what your plantations look like.

Re: Southern Oil Palm and Rubber Plantations

I just noticed that this is called Southern Oil Palm and Rubber Plantations so I'll give you all a wee look at my one and only rubber plantation, only 15 rai and not very tidy so nothing to get excited about.

It cost us this much and we sold it for double amount that six months ago:

Here's the famous rubber-tapping in progress:

Then, using a secret formula of acid and water it is turned into rubber sheets:

Alternatively it can be sold as raw, unprocessed rubber which was my preference:

Here's Mum asking me loads and loads of questions about everything:

Re: Southern Oil Palm and Rubber Plantations

I really enjoyed reading this thread. The area, and the whole plantation is beautiful. You are very lucky, and hard work does pay off in the end.
