Re: Southern Oil Palm and Rubber Plantations
what a great thread, LLL.
really interesting to read about alternatives to doing the teacher thing.
i come from a sheep farming background in the hills west of glasgow, where my brother, tries to scratch a living off some fairly poor land. the contrast between your thriving plantation and my big bruv's wee hill farm makes it all the more fascinating to read about your progress.
keep us posted.

Keep up the good work.
I like the 4000 baht hut idea.

Kind words mate, thanks. When are you and yours going to pop down here? Eric C and his brother-in-law were on the plantation today and had a great time tearing about in the 4WD. Pics to follow soon.

Re: Southern Oil Palm and Rubber Plantations
Best of all possible luck with this. I just hope you don't have hundreds of ajarn.com members rolling up and trying to get in on the action.
I wouldn't blame them, mind. You make it all sound like paradise.
Good for you, mate. Good for you.

Re: Southern Oil Palm and Rubber Plantations
This is an awesome thread. The pictures are beautiful! It looked like some very, very hard work but it has all paid off. The whole story of you getting out the rat race is great.
So do you still teach a few hours a week or is your income soley on the palm trees? I am sorry if you have mentioned this in this thread or elsewhere on the forum.

Re: Southern Oil Palm and Rubber Plantations
No, I don't teach anymore Icey and my main income comes from the water and ice shop that I bought with The Wife a year and a half ago. It has given us a welcome boost as the trees are not yet mature enough to produce to their full potential. We'll start seeing large monthly yields next year, at the moment we only get about 3-4 tonnes from 40 rai of land.
I'm glad that you and so many others have enjoyed this thread, I thought that it might be a tad dull but looking back over the years it has been quite an adventure and these photos don't quite depict just how hard it was at the beginning.

Re: Southern Oil Palm and Rubber Plantations
Do you live nearby the land then? Have you ever posted a picture of your house? The land looks absolutley gorgeous and I want to know if your house looks equally as beautiful.

Re: Southern Oil Palm and Rubber Plantations
Actually Icey, The Wife and I live in our shop at the moment which really isn't ideal as we have the in-laws and three Burmese workers living with us too so it is very noisy during the day and there is no real privacy. This is just temporary though as we hope to make a start on building our house early next month, I'll do a thread for that too.
These photos aren't great but this is the raised area where we will build our house and the three metre deep pond which will provide the view out of our bedroom:

Wow, that looks a dream! Lovely little girl too. I look forward to seeing the thread about the house building. I know how troublesome it can be living will inlaws!

That raw rubber has a very distinct, unpleasant and I hate to admit familiar smell to it that does not come off you for a good couple of days.

Yea, that's what I thought too until I went down there and checked it out. All of this is happening on the side of a mountain and it takes some serious 4x4 driving to get up in and out of there. Some seriously hard work involved which can't be appreciated from the pics.

Not going to happen. It looks like all of the plantation land with easy road access was planted long ago and is unlikely to be changing hands. Too bad they didn't have the more productive breeds of Palm back then that are available today.

Right, when I get my photos and video from the trip sorted I'll put some up that will hopefully give a better perspective.
