Not Teaching In Thailand Life beyond teaching in Thailand, whether still living in LOS and making a living by other means, or living in another country, teaching or otherwise. Plus the practicalities of visas and migration there.

Uh-huh, right. Sure you will. If uni was a toddle you should have finished and got your degree.
Look mate, just get on the plane to Phuket and see for yourself what it's all about. You are kind of sideways looking for someone to tell you that anyway, so go for it.
The hard lessons are often the best ones.
Good luck.

Re: This is my plan, any ideas?
I'm in South Carolina right now. Not from there though thank god. I'm from Maryland. And I agree with hard lessons are the best ones statement. And shoulda coulda woulda with the finishing the degree thing. I was bored and disinterested in every subject at that time. And wouldn't trade the last 12 years of my life for anything. I have no regrets about not finishing at that time. I'm hoping I like Phuket enough to ground myself there for a while to knock out the degree, scrape out a living in the meantime, and enjoy a little of Asia. But who knows, we'll see when I get there.

Re: This is my plan, any ideas?
I was typing this on an iphone while I was slinging drinks. My bad. It's a forum, not a a graded essay. But thanks. I'm still considering that. Still in the planning stage. That's why I started the thread. Just don't want to bartend anymore and I would have to do that hear (haha). Anyway, if I could do it there, that's what I want to do. Not gonna be easy, I know. But I think it's fesible.

Re: This is my plan, any ideas?
Kevhov, there are a lot of bitter people on here who have degrees and to whom the idea of non-graduates teaching is anathema. For some reason they'll do everything they can to dissuade people like yourself for coming over here, even though they've all been here years, are in cushy jobs that you won't get and despite the fact that schools all over Thailand are crying out for native-speaking teachers.
Ignore these people.
The government doesn't make it easy for you (or me) as a non-degree holder, but as long as you get a tefl you will have NO PROBLEMS getting a job.

lets go from grades:

what do all these levels have in common?
you guessed it! it takes a college education at the very minimum to teach it
so, if it was good enough FOR YOU-- yes you cancer---for some straaange reason people back home (oh, and every fucking country except for uber poor ones) have found that yes! a college education is the bare necessity to be an educator.
"but i looooove EDUCATION!!! i just hate getting an education!"
no really...is that your argument?
that everyone has the god given right to work in a classroom?
"i can be an air force pilot!"........."but you need to go to flight school".........."fucking commies"

can he work in a language academy? sure. the students pay- so no harm no foul. if hes good, the school will love him....but like most, he will struggle. thats not to say that a person who doesnt go to college cant be a great language coach, but the question still remains...
WHY EDUCATION?
why not computers, or any other type of work that the adult did in their life.
WHY WORK IN A FIELD THAT YOU FIND TO BE:
1. repulsive- have no interest in learning
2. have no patience for
3. dont want to invest time in (months-years)
4. dont have or dont want to invest resources in
so all props go to those who want to travel. i just find it a bit funny (no really, its funny) that people first want to travel, and then- hey! i too can get a job in the exciting field of education.
working in academies...no problem there.
but if we expect that EVERYONE is schooled with educated teachers back home- what makes you or anyone think that thats not a big deal for thailand.
"i want to work in the exciting field of travel- no-i mean teaching!"
"its just that i hate school"

Re: This is my plan, any ideas?
there are tons of tefl academy jobs for those willing to try something new.
just kinda funny you get those guys who think they can teach cause theyre american or whatever.
although its commonly heard in staffrooms that many thai schools will accept any ol' farang...having white skin doesnt qualify you for the task at hand.
no, the job requires that you do more than just utter english. there are actually techniques in applying methods to the language classroom. not that educated people are good at those techniques...its that the school can hold you accountable to them. what do you say to an uneducated teacher who falls short? "we expected more of you?"
exactly what did you expect?
and thats not pretending that a college education makes you a good people person. but every job had its hurdles to cross- a weeding out so to speak. its insane to think that an industry, or a country isnt allowed to do such.
aka- raising the bar.
me? i'm doing the fuckin' preposition limbo

Fran be quick,
Now get your ass under that preposition limbo stick!

Re: This is my plan, any ideas?
Like I said initially, I kind of understand why schools want a degree. But let's be realistic. Just because someone has a degree in some generally unrelated field doesn't necessarily make them any better of a teacher than I or anyone else could be. I would be getting a job teaching little kids who probably don't speak much English at all. I'm not teaching organic chemistry here. I never said I want to teach without a degree forever. The key to being qualified to teach is to know what you are are teaching better than your students. I don't absolutely need a degree in Phys. ED., or whatever ridiculously varied field of study most people have, to be good at teaching kids basic English skills. NO class in college teaches you how to teach Thai children pronunciation. As I move up the ladder to teach more advanced areas I will have educated myself, in that field, to teach that.
Let's look at the other laughable aspect of having a degree of being looked at by employers to someone being able to stick to a task for a period of time. Yeah right. It's really tough to drink, party, get laid, got to football games and show up to class enough and pull a few all nighters and get that degree in Political Science. Which, of course, makes you God of all teachers of English. If you didn't do this in college, your a geek and I apologize for insulting your dedication. But you should be teaching rocket science then. I've been working in the same restaurant for 7 years (and you should meet my boss). Doesn't that also mean I can stick to something for a long time.
My point is 90% of people working out there are doing so with a degree which is totally unrelated and realistically didn't improve how good they are at their job. It simply helped them to get that job. Being a good teacher comes from experience of dealing with students, motivating them, and coming up with ideas to make them want to learn what you are teaching. I see nothing wrong with getting educated and qualified if that's what you want to do. And actually that is what I plan on doing. But if in the meantime I can teach little kids English, then I will be gaining experience at the same time.

Nice to see you writing at two different threads. Writing about having or .....not having a degree is not the issue and even not the topic of discussion in your case.
Just find your way kevhov, without justifying the in and outs. You will do fine but as I wrote in another thread: for the time being.

That's what it is all about. It's the ticket. It's that simple, really.
Like I posted earlier, just hop on that plane. Why did you ask for advice when you have no intention of taking anything on board? You'll never know unless you go.
