to get a teacher's license in USA you need an FBI background check

it's not unreasonable to ask for that here, especially for primary and secondary schoolteachers, it's just damned inconvenient

the thai goverment should set up a system for obtaining these kinds of documents in a reasonable way if it wants to implement this kind of check.

the last fbi check i had done in usa i had to download a couple of forms, go to local police to get properly fingerprinted, send it to Wash D.C. and wait 6 weeks or so. It would be very difficult to do that from here i think.
    ...you get what you need.

Anyone got a clean record I can copy for future reference??

I'm not 100% sure that arson would be considered a spent offence when applying for a background check to be a teacher.
Let us know how it goes though, eh.

    Reginald is just being daft.
A conditional discharge of any nature is spent after 1 year according to the 1974 act (8 years ago in my case).
Unfortunately, there are exeptions in terms of spent convictions when it comes to working with kids and as the CRB only issues reports for people working with kids, both spent and unspent convictions will be shown.

I kinda thought he was being daft.

Nevertheless, its a good point you make which may also affect some people regarding both spent and unspet convictions being shown up by the CRB.
Happily i'm as clean as a whistle, though i imagine some people's youthfull follies could return to haunt them.

We could maybe think about a sticky thread being made about how to go about gaining the required paperwork for teachers of different nationalities. Assuming this thing does actually come into frutition of course.

Wouldn't be in NZ. If it's an offence potentially prisonable for a year or more, then the Clean Slate Act isn't applicable. This Act only applies to those offences older than seven years, and then only under certain conditions (like the aforementioned). But if the application for disclosure is for the purposes of visa applications - if declared as such - or requested by a foreign embassy - the Act is considered null and void. Doesn't help Boris any, but for Kiwi's, just some further info.

Under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act, convictions become spent after a period of 5 years unless, you are seeking a post which involves working with young or vulnerable people (and some other professions eg Police, Legal Profession etc) in which case, they are never spent.

    ^
    not so.
a jail term of over 2.5 years is never spent.
a jail term of less than 2.5 years is spent after a different length of time depending on the length of sentence.
a conditional discharge is spent after a year.

    ok
^ wasn't quite right, but a conditional discharge is spent after a year.

Don't ask LA...famed for being very difficult indeed!!! And it only applies to those that apply at LA (so don't).

    cheers.
In regards to the former it only applies to some places (although in Asia it seems it applies to most of them), in regards to the latter no it won't affect an activation.

Ken, a similar police check requirement (as to what SJCG linked to the LA consulate's web site) is also now required for a Non-Imm B according to the Chicago consulate's web site which handles the part of the US I live in. Only difference, if I remember correctly, is that they ask for the check from your local police department and it must be notarized.
I think this confirms that people seeking Non-Imm B visas from US consulates currently need to submit a check from a US police agency with their application.
