    Re: Teachers' License

The DOS at our place was contacted yesterday afternoon by the good lady who sorts our visas out etc.

She'd just been for a meeting at the M.O.E and it had been agreed that they were to start demanding that all EFL teachers have a degree in Education! Despite the mirth that this created in the office - where of 10 teachers, only 1 would be qualified to stay - she was pretty sure that they would initially press ahead in their quest!

It will be fun should they try to implement this, that's for sure.

If we have this great relationship, why should we pick on them?....They (the leaders) found new gas resources. I negotiated with them so we can sign contracts."

    Re: Teachers' License

I'm looking forward to the results coming out for the meeting on the 11th. (or so).

I'm thinking ninety percent of folks don't have an education degree. I really can't imagine that they would rid the country of ninety percent of English teachers in one foul swoop.

I also suspect that the new regulations may be going to be applied for new WP applications after that February date. Some I know are being encourgared to sign two year contracts now, just to buy some extra time.
If you're being run out of town, get in front of the crowd and make it look like a parade.

Thinking logically, you'd be correct, but when has logic ever played a part? Of course it won't happen - it can't happen - but to even propose such an idea gives you an insight into the way they're thinking.

Let's face it; it's not like they actually want us here.

    Re: Teachers' License

There seems to be so much panic about possible rule changes, but it has been like this since I came to Thailand six years ago. I would imagine that it was probably like this ten years ago with rumors of 'the sky is falling'. There still seems to be plenty of work and plenty of people working, with or without qualifications. I sometimes wonder is it just better to ignore these rumors until the sky actually does fall. It sometimes seems that many westerners working in Thailand are just waiting to be chucked out. Not a great way to live. I don't really see myself as having much choice but to meet whatever requirements they ask me to meet, I have a wife and child here. I am studying for a PGCE by distance learning in an attempt to gain more security. But until they actually officially state the requirements, and enforce them, is there any point in speculation. Worrying too much is the way to madness.

That's right garro. Sounds points. The only way to fly.

I've just seen the actual documents. They are asking for a degree in education but there are then a series of ifs and but's relating to certain clauses which I didn't really understand.

For example, if you have a non-education degree they are asking for a 'foreign license to teach' instead of the education degree. Surely that would be any TEFL qual?

The director now has the docs so if he can make any sense of them I'll post back later on when I've finished for the day.

I doubt it. It sounds more like the PGCE or something similar, but who knows. In some of the posts earlier on this and related subjects there were several exceptions to the B.Ed. requirement, including education courses and tests.

No need to worry excessively now, as garro pointed out.

    Again (and I'll type slowly):
    1. BEd
    2. BSc or BA or higher, with a foreign teaching credential.
    3. BSc or BA or higher, pass Thai Teacher Knowledge exams (in English). Four tests, covering 9 subject areas, one year of experience teaching in a Thai school.
    4. BSC or BA or higher, pass Thai Alternative Teacher Certification program, one year of experience teaching in a Thai school.

Thai Culture Course required for all of the above.

For example, if you have a non-education degree they are asking for a 'foreign license to teach' instead of the education degree. Surely that would be any TEFL qual?
If you hold a license or certification to teach, issued by a governmental body in some other country, you qualify for #2. I'm not sure if a TEFL certificate would meet that requirement. Let's see what your DOS comes back with.

    The requirements have been stated.

And what kicked off this thread was that they were starting to be enforced (denied visa extensions, WP's on hold, etc.).

But enforced sporadically and unevenly. Indeed, to date, enforcement has been very limited. The question is where to now? General and consistent enforcement or major modification and the whole program fading away.

Most states in Oz have as a requirement of the award of Teaching Certificate minimum 205 teaching days :two observations by the recommending authority.BEd or Dip Ed

Flashed my wanga at them but they still took 500 b as they admitted they were the only country in the world who didn't recognize it.

To point one... no chance... TIT, where is ANYTHING generally and consistently enforced....
To point two, probably... due to point one...
