Culture Course update: This is from HoD, so taken with a pillar of salt. HoD attended a national English institute meeting with reps of all EP's under OBEC (gov schools) last week. Think this was the same group featured in BP's Ed section last week.
There are four schools that act as regional centers for the programs: one in BKK, one in Surat Thani, one in Khon Khaen, and didn't mention where the northern region's center was. Each of those centers will be responsible for putting on the culture course for foreign teachers in their region. Each center has been given a 2.5 million baht budget for this year to implement that.
I have no idea what this means for private and voc-ed staffs, or just where this 10 MTHB is going to go. But it seems like they ought to be able to run the courses at no cost to gov school teachers with that kinda gelt.
When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.
Nope its seems like they'll pocket the money and then try and charge us as much as they can get away with. Just like all the other changes, they say they'll do this and then realise it won't work and back down. Just like the 500 baht and the teacher licenses. Take the free money and let the dust settle.Originally Posted by av8tor
P, surely you wouldn't begrudge some of those poorly-paid (as we're so often reminded) civil servants the opportunity to stick a few hundred thousand baht in their pockets for a weekend's work? Why, most of the overpaid falang teachers in government schools earn that in nearly a year!Originally Posted by peelieorion

Well, that should cover the cost of the whiskey, in any case. Each center has been given a 2.5 million baht budget for this year to implement that.
Seems that there really isn't anything really concrete that we know for sure, speaking as a member of the teaching community.
We do seem to know that Teacher's Licenses are no longer being issued. That's a concern.
Outside of that, it sounds to me like "wait and see is the only policy"

It's the same old same old. The rumors keep being spewed over and over, then nothing really happens.
If anyone is in a position to be in trouble it's staff at al the "inter" schools. Based on the prices i was quoted for bi-lingual kindi and pratom for my daughter i'll be asking about teacher qualifications as well to be honest.
I've said it before and i'll say it again, the ones who benefit are the agencies. schools can't be aresed with the aggro caused by their own bureaucracy so they take the easy route and higher from agencies, which, unfortunately supplies the lesser qualified teachers, with out TL or WP or police checks etc....etc. If you're in the shit at an inter because you don't measure up, call a few agencies and you'll be working tomorrow for a few shingles less.
"ah!" I hear you say "then wages will go up in inter schools!"
My answer would be no they won't, after parents refuse to pay 100,000 up for non native speakers in bi-lingual inter schools, more will close down and filthy rich owners will sell the real estate and put their money in a better bet.
It's a nice thought to think wages will match other countries with Native English speakers teaching. Fact is, they never will because TIT, there is always a way round the bull.

Regarding the latest request for a degree in Education: our head of operations in Thailand and the head at the school have agreed that it's a) the current government trying to leave its mark before it departs b) totally unfeasible and c) likely to be forgotten within the next couple of months.

They say the country lives in peace. We have three neighbours: Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar. We use their resources, all three of them. If we have this great relationship, why should we pick on them?....They (the leaders) found new gas resources. I negotiated with them so we can sign contracts."
I started a poll on ThaiVisa today to see if people thought the proposed changes could be of benefit to teachers and students. Suprisingly 75% so far feel that it could bring benefits. I wonder what the result would be if the same poll was conducted on Ajahn?

I must admit that it hasn't been a massive turn-out with only 14 votes so far.
Two votes were also void.
Still, I've been surprised by the result so far.
