Perhaps off-topic because this is about a work permit renewal but I thought interesting to report.

I just came back from the Labour Office for a work permit renewal. I brought all the necessary paperwork and was expecting the "Application Receiving Form ตท 5" to submit to Immigration next week when my visa extension expires.

I didn't get the ตท 5. In my work permit book Labour stamped work permit valid until 29 April 2009. Upon asking Labour told me that the rules have changed. The work permit isn't tied anymore to the visa. I couldn't find out whether this applies to renewals only.

^ Not the case with us mate.

I personally don't have to go to Labor for any of mine...but we're still doing the same...renew WP, extend Visa, extend WP in turn.

Although from the info I'm getting at the moment it seems from Imm office to Imm office (and Labor) it seems to vary!!!

    Fun times!!!

Exactly the news my friend got yesterday when he went to labour after some coaxing. Rules have changed, work permit not tied to visa and he's free and clear, straight from the mouth of the Labour office.

Well, for this week in any case.

Re: Visa renewal and work permit.

I just got a new WP because I messed up and didn't get my visa renewed in time (so my previous WP expired). I still have to do the ol' renew-the-visa-before-the-WP but here's the details:

a.) The work permit says it IS valid for a year BUT--
b.) --you have to be sure to renew your visa first SO--
c.) --you still need to go back to labour after renewing your visa.

Fortunately the lady there made sure to tell me "Come back here after renewing your visa"

Check it out: on page 3 of the WP the red stamp will say your permit is valid for a year, but on page 7 it'll say it's only valid until the date your visa expires.

So yes, your WP is still tied to your visa, although MAYBE if you're like me and you forgot to renew your visa in time, they'll allow you to extend your WP instead of you having to get a new one. Big MAYBE there... very doubtful by the way the lady at Labour made sure I got the message to "be back after extending the visa".
I wish I could afford to make just a dollar a year.

That's just standard operating procedure I think. Labour, Immigration, Labour.

I don't think they have to give you the 7 days grace if the contract is up, it generally applies to leaving mid-contract mate.
