Immigration at Nong Khai enforced the new regulations back in Oct 2006, but then promptly dropped them about 2 or 3 months later.
They have just reintroduced them again. No warning, nothing.
I went to Vientiane on Friday to get my visa renewed, and met a shedload of people who had been refused entry back into T'land. Some of them were people with things like wives, kids, houses and cars too.
I'm trying to help one guy I met who's in a real pickle.
Does anyone know of another Lao/Thai crossing where he can get stamped back in? I.E. Savannakhet/Mukdahan.

Very sad indeed. The only thing for them to do is go to Vientiane and apply for a tourist visa. Truly hope they have enough money and time to do so.

That's what I told him to do, but he's got very little money. He literally has enough for one more night in a cheap guesthouse and a bus to Savannaket.

I never knew they stopped enforcing the law. I've always been told by immigration Nongkhai that I have to go to the embassey after 2 30 day stamps. I do have sympathy for those caught out but what are people doing crossing the border and not having at least a little money on them. 34 dollars to get into Laos and 1000 baht for a tourist visa. good on you for trying to help
Could be something with all the border posts now being computerised and linked. I think this has just started.
this is something I dislike about Thailand. If they sticked to the rule there would be no problems - people would know what to expect etc. But they drop it, and then reintroduce it without any notice. Stupid.
Sorry Scorpio but I have no idea about borders and their rules but looks like applying for a new visa is your friend's only option.
New academic year begins soon, so maybe they are waiting for bribes to pay for their children's books and uniforms - this is what the police in Buriram are doing.

That's what happens when you have a visa on arrival stamp. Tourist visas (the stickers) are renewable indefinitely.
Illegal aliens will make you pay...legal aliens can get you paid.

I find it hard to muster any sympathy at all for such people ..... to be so irresponsible beggars belief.

I'd rely on Thai Visa Forum for any official matters...and a phone call to the consulate in Ventianne always helps.
The stamp you get in your passport is not a tourist visa. It is a visa on arrival. A tourist visa comes from an embassy out of the country, and is for two months (either single or multiple entry) and can be extended for another month at immigration. You can get three of these and then you have to do two border runs.....and then you can repeat the process again

But you can't renew them indefinitely ..... only for a few weeks
