Hello, just inquiring on the most up to date info on Criminal Background checks for teaching. Is a State background check in the U.S. sufficent for obtaining a work visa in teaching in Thailand, or do you need an FBI Nationwide background check? I plan on teaching soon in Thailand and need to know.Thank you

i just got my non-immigrant B visa and work permit sorted - and i did not need any kind of criminal record check or anything. they didnt even ask. diplomas, transcripts, letter from the board of education (your school should sort that out for you) and the application forms and such, thats all i needed.
Thanks for your help.The only reason I'm concern is that a freind of mine's Wife had a record and had criminal background checks done on her in Khon Kaen when She applied.She was denied employment.I think She had been working at the School for 6 months and they did the BC then let her go.
What kind of a record? Is this something that the school did, or was there a background check and she was denied a WP or visa extension? It sounds like she didn't supply anything, so I would assume that you wouldn't need anything in the same area.

I'm not certain.This happened back in 2007.She was working at a school for 6 months her Husband worked as a Sales rep for a fishing net factory.They bounced her from the job after they ran a background check.She applied at other Schools,but turned her down after they did BC's.They then had to move back to NZ.
This doesn't quite ring true.
1) Most schools don't require background checks
2) Government offices asked for checks sporadically for only a few months. This was sometime last year.
3) A school can't do a background check on you, you have to do one on yourself and provide the results. It is possible for a school to go through a private data collecting agency for this information, but is expensive and not something the vast majority of schools would even contemplate.
In any case, I wouldn't bother with one. You can always get fingerprinted here in Thailand and take care of it if when required, and even then you would likely be given time to procure it by the school admin.

I think it's best to play it safe and get one done before you come over here. That's the best answer to the "do I need one or not" question IMO. I got one done on my last trip home - easy.
Yes, I got my Visa & WP renewed recently, and nobody asked for a criminal background check. However, I do know with 100% certainty that some people were asked to produce background checks in my province.
