I'm a little confused about the these tests.
My school has just told us all we MUST take these tests in October or we're out of our jobs. We've been told that if we don't register then we will lose our teachers licences and thus work permits, visas and jobs.
I spoke to some teachers from another school who've just done the Thai Culture course and they were told that the TCT tests won't be compulsory for another two years.
So, what do I have to do, TCT tests, culture course, neither or both?
If you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth
Basically you have to do whatever your school tells you to do, or find another job.
The real skinny, as I understand it, is that you need to do the Culture Course as soon as possible, but can wait on the TCT tests a bit as they won't be enforcing this until the start of the 2010 academic year. An alternative to the TCT tests is to obtain a legitimate teacher certification from your home country. Evidently you can also do one right here in Thailand, but I have been unable to confirm that any teacher training program at any university in Thailand has actually been formally approved by the TCT. Until I can get that confirmation I am waiting in a holding pattern.
...you get what you need.

Thanks,
My school seems to be under the impression that we don't have to do the culture course but we do have to the TCT tests. So have they got things the wrong way round?
If we do the tests but not the culture course, what happens?

The 2010 number comes from the 2-year waiver granted to teachers at the beginning of this academic year.
I don't think there are any correct answers to these questions. The fact is nobody really knows. Information is not being shared between governmental agencies much less with schools and teachers.
You could try contacting the TCT and asking them directly. I think Champagne Charlie has done just that, and may be able to tell you how to contact with them if you pm him. The contact information for the TCT is floating around on this forum somewhere, but I can't remember which thread.

My understanding, and the general opinion at the EP meeting, was 2009.
The current TCT requirements still are:
- education degree or equivalent or any degree with foreign teaching credentials or any degree and a Graduate Diploma in the Teaching Profession (or equivalent) or any degree and have passed the TCT Professional Knowledge Tests
- certificate of the Thai Language, Culture and Ethics Course
- at least one year of experience
Here are the current requirements: http://www.ksp.or.th/upload/301/files/570-8429.pdf

I have a question. I am not teaching in Thailand but would like to come over within the next year. I am a certified teacher in Canada (I have my B.Ed) and I'm currently working with the Toronto District School Board. How would these tests and courses affect me when I come over? I'm a newbie to the forum so maybe my questions have been answered elsewhere.
Thanks
