Visa question???
Hi Everyone,
My Plan is to leave Australia and arrive in Thailand around the 20th, 21st. 22nd December 2008 (depending on flights available). I am then enrolled in a TEFL course which starts on the 5th January and ends 30th January. The course includes a Thai beginners course starting on the 1st February which runs for three weeks. I was then going to look for work at the start of March teaching preschool hopefully! ( I have a bachelor of teaching and alot of experience).
What visa do I need to apply for??? I have been told a tourist visa will be suitable but they are only valid for 60 days??? and the 90 day visa needs to be approved by the consulate in Bangkok and can take up to 3 months???
This is very friggin confusing, any advice would be appreciated?!?!?!?
Thanks
Beck

Re: Visa question???
Heya Beck,
You can extend the tourist visa for another 30 days once you're over there. I think. I'm new to this too. Anyway, good luck. I'm departing Melbourne for Chiang Mai in a couple of weeks.

Re: Visa question???
The start of March is the end of term here. Not the best time to start looking. They will have summer camps and then start back around the first week of may.

Re: Visa question???
Fluffy,
Ask Ken Kaniff, he's Visa God! Also, AO is right, you should not be surprised if it is difficult to find jobs in March.
However, good luck and welcome to the forum!

Re: Visa question???
Welcome Beck.
With your Quals and experience and intention of teaching preschool I suggest that the course you have enrolled in ...whilst good for your esteem and sliding gently into teaching here is probably going to be a waste of money and probably your time...Tho be as active as you can and milk the teacher as much info as you can ...In particular activities for use in the class room...Your biggest asset in surviving is your sense of humor.
Good luck

Re: Visa question???
As to the best Visa you can get....it all depends where you are in Oz??? So let me know please!!!
Nonsense about the 90 day Visa needing to be approved at a Consulate here in Bangers (as fas as I know there ain't any Consulates in Bangers and even if there was it's nowt to do with them).....no Visa IME EVER takes three months to obtain!!!

Re: Visa question???
kk, don't the good TEFL course places help the student/s/ (the people who are taking the course) to obtain a non B visa before they come to Thailand?

Re: Visa question???
Well Beck, as you've got plenty of time before you arrive in Thailand, ask your TEFL course people if they can send over the paperwork to you so you can obtain a Non B visa before you leave.
A bit of advice try for a one year multi B visa, that would make it so after the TEFL course etc you don't have to worry about the visa when getting a job.

Re: Visa question???
Thanks so much for all the advice......I just found an email explaining all the info about the non immigrant B visa I hadn't read...oooops!
I thought I had to do a TEFL to teach as a few employers have asked me why I haven't got one?? or if i'm planning to completing one?!?! either way it will be good to gain more knowledge!
I'm hoping to get work at a language school? apparently they have different terms to the other schools...
So funny I thought I had all this trip/Journey worked out, but with Ajarn i'm learning alot more and realising I prob don't know the half of catches to living overseas and teaching in a foreign country!! part of the challenge
beck
p.s I live in SYDNEY!!!
p.p.s: What is the story about scams in Thailand??? is there anywhere I can read up on these.....

Re: Visa question???
Judging from a number of ads. I have seen, a TEFL qualification is getting less important, especially in China. As long as you've got any degree you are OK. So if you have a masters in nuclear physics you will go far and make a great English language teacher. That's how fucked up the shit-head TEFL employer are!
