    Another VISA question

In order for me to obtain a 1-year multiple-entry non-immigrant B visa, I must show proof of a confirmed onward ticket. Can I just purchase a cheap $30 one way ticket to any of the neighboring countries?

This seems like a silly rule to me because they are giving you permission to be in the country for the entire year, but at the same time they expect you to know exactly when and where you will be leaving/heading to. Who plans that far in advance?

First of all, your multiple entry one year expiration date doesn't give you permission to stay for one year. It gives you permission to stay for 90 days and then you need to leave the country and return for another 90 days. Two years ago they wanted proof of departure. They ended it after a while, but it seems as they reinstated it. You can try to tell them that you plan on taking a bus to malaysia. I don't know why you don't just get a return ticket though they aren't that much more than one way.

Most Consulates do not require onward tickets - but some do. If you are working here and expect to stay a year at a time you should extend your stay at Immigration (if you qualify). Then you would only need a single entry visa.
As said a cheap ticket will do the trick when required.

Most consulates from my experience won't ask if you are applying for a 1-year non-imm visa because it's clear you intend to stay for at least 1 year. As far as I know you can't buy an return/onward ticket more than a year in advance. Hence the requirement is superfluous anyway.

    Re: Another VISA question

Actually it is not that clear as most people obtaining multi entry non immigrant B visas are business travelers and they do so for frequent trips. Those that stay are expected to obtain one year extensions of stay from Immigration each year. Unfortunataly not everyone can meet the requirements so a percentage of visa issue is for people who must make the 90 day border runs.
