Thread: TCT License - Rejected

A mate of mine just applied for the teacher's license in Thailand. He has a B.A. in English Literature and Teacher Certification (35 education credits). He was a licensed teacher in Georgia and taught in Georgia government high schools for 3 years. He was rejected because the TCT doesn't think his education credits fit what they are looking for. Obviously they can't say what else he needs or what precisely was missing, but there it is. Rejected.

This suggests to me that even if I were to return to my home county. Do the coursework. Get licensed. Work in US schools for several years, I still wouldn't qualify to be a teacher in Thailand.

What kind of nonsense is this?

frigging blows my mind. The dichotomy between the education my kids get from Western teachers in the EP program, and the Thai teachers and their program is just too much these days. Thought my problems were over once I got them in. Not at all. Thinking about going back to the USA even more now. What do you have to know about teaching to simply say "read your book" it seems once you are over 40 and basically tenured here thats what teaching is to Thai educators.

Gonna be the demise of all Thai society within a few decades if they dont wake up. They are not ashamed now to proclaim the average IQ of a Thai is 85.

What's normal for IQ?

higher than 85 I do believe. Off to google.

For what its worth. Looked at a few, this one seems easy to understand. Its all very arbitrary anyway....

The properties of the normal distribution apply to IQ scores:

• 50% of IQ scores fall between 90 and 110
• 70% of IQ scores fall between 85 and 115
• 95% of IQ scores fall between 70 and 130
• 99.5% of IQ scores fall between 60 and 140

seems so much stacked up against you fellas these days. not sure i have any idea why you bother. thai government policy makes it perfectly clear your efforts are not appreciated.

no, i wouldn't mate.

but i'm gonna say this; guy has a degree, was a licensed teacher in the u.s.a. and has three years teaching experience in the u.s.a.

if this isn't good enough to qualifiy for a teacher's license then neither are about 80% of those teaching in thailand that have less.

Could also be that the local administrator is giving his/her own specifications to the "requirements'.

Does your friend have a TEFL certificate?

Well, my friend is the Head of English for our department. He is a respected teacher who has some administrative duties. He has no issues whatsoever with the school and they do not want him to leave. His work is top notch. I know this because I am also a department head and de-facto head teacher due to my close relationship with the program director. So I'm certain it isn't anything to do with the school. This one seems all on the TCT or MoE.

Is there anything noticeable about your friends appearance that might cause a backward individual concern?

What I'm having a difficult time with is the fact that the school wants him and yet this is happening. Doesn't ring true.

There's something missing here IMO.

i'd confidently guess that the people issuing the license have never seen the guy russ.
