There is nothing more spectacular, in terms of seeing language being picked up than to see a 4 year old child born of two fairly well-educated Thais, but who speaks nothing but Thai accelerate above and beyond their English capabilities in the space of 6 months, no classes, just immersion in the culture.
My wife has got a friend here in the UK who came over with her daughter to live with her Thai husband currently doing a PhD here. They speak only Thai at home, but she watches UK TV. She's not even at school yet, but her ability to communicate in English has gone from understanding a tiny bit but not able to speak (in March), to full blown understanding and conversational ability (August). She now speaks English as her social language with my daughter (who has never been too hot at Thai) and will probably not need ESL attention when she gets to primary school this month, and is almost fully bi-lingual. Really inspiring to see.

Come on, get serious, the post is very interesting. I similarly knew an expat who had a bar in Pattaya in those halcyon days of early tourism. His boy was about 5-6 years old and ran around with a bunch of Thai kids all chatting away in Thai. What do young kids have that we don't? Question for a philosopher of epistemology I think - Any of that rare breed out there?

Remember how we learnt to speak our mother tongue ?
Listening to others all around us,radio (in my youth) T.V.,movies cartoons the list is endless, then imitating what other input all around was saying, with help from others we learnt, that's how kids do it,kids don't need too much formal input.

Several years ago when I had a Chinese wife we brought her 7 year old Son to Australia ....The only English words he knew was my name and MacDonalds .
Through the influence of the games I played with him ,TV , computers and freindly Aussie kids he ended up Duxing his class at the private school I sent him to ( except sport)

Yes it is nice to see a kid excel .. in anything.
Since language is symbolism, and since children are drawn to symbols, it really doesn't seem to matter what language the kid has partially mastered, there's plenty of room for another. An object or action or concept having a score of different names attached to it is not difficult for someone under six or seven to accept. I know that in many bilingual households where the hubbies and wifies are void of the others language, the kids simply learn what words work with daddy and which are for mummie, too young to realize what bilingualism is. Too kool tho! Language is a beautiful thing and so are children. Nice they get along so well.
