People keep recommending the Bangkok Guide, so I almost bought it today. However I hestitated when I saw "2005-2006 Edition," and the copyright date of 2005. How old, exactly, is this edition, and is a new one expected soon? Is it released annually?
I also looked in the bookstore for a good book about Thai food but I couldn't find one. I want a book (or a website for that matter) that will help me take better advantage of all the amazing food around me, particularly street food.
There are a couple of web sites:

You're making one of those huge mistakes that alot of us westerners made when we first came here. Thinking that written info or advertising is either correct or current. The best thing to do is ask people who have lived here for a while, explore and discover things on your own.
I live in what we could call a suburb, and I've discovered alot of great things by accident or through others.
I haven't bought any books and I definitely see that they are usually unnecessary. I've just had a TON of people say to get the Bangkok Guide, including the guy who worked in this position before me and spent 2 years here.
As for the food thing, yeah nothing takes the place of experience, but right now I am a little clueless about what to order at certain types of vendors.
I would recommend the current 2005-2006 guide. It's just what it says...a guide not a bible. Even if you've been here a while there are useful suggestions on where to find stuff. Always good to ask people for personal recommendations as well but the guide is a useful starting point.
It's updated every year-in the spring I think.
Really? So the 2005-2006 just came out a few months ago??? I would think from the way they date it that the 2005-2006 would have come out in 2005?Originally Posted by khru

Guess it takes a while to get printed and distributed.
^I agree. There is a wealth of information in it and some of the things you may never find out or even know of their existence.
Really comprehensive about all subjects.
Thanks guys. I'll probably pick it up, there is a realty on Sukhumvit between Emporium and Soi 22 that has them for 800 baht that I walk by every day. In each of the two Emporium bookstores it is 850.
