how hard is it too become a thai citizen?

after reading all these posts about the laws changing so that tourists can only stay in the country for a certain amount of time i started to think!

i marry a US citizen, she applies for UK settlement visa yes?
    it works vice versa!
i can get a US settlement visa if i mary a girl born in the US right?

so i marry a thai girl is there a way of me becoming a thai citizen complete with an ID card etc?

it seems simple enough to bring a chick back to the west but i have never heard a case of the western man/women becoming a full thai national! even if they have kids with there partners!!

so effectively you can be married, have thai children and still be an immigrant?

    it's doable.

takes more than a fair bit of time, money and patience. very, very few bother.

It takes ALOT of money. It's only worth it to people who are either from coutries that are more dangerous or risky to live in, or for people who are of mixed descent such as from a Thai mother and "foreign" father.

You're from England, right? Picture yourself with a Thai passport, flying back to England. Would this serve any benefit to you? Will you stay in Thailand forever? Thai citizenship places limits on visas to travel to certain countries.

You have to be able to read, write and speak Thai - and they test you - I think!

^ Yeah for women it's a peice of piss as it's a manly culture and that.

I know a few chaps with residence and I think one chap with citizenship (didn't have tons of money though, but it might have changed recently).

Nat if I got a Thai passport I'd obviously not use it to travel to the UK, rather would use my English one

If you have kids you can get a Non-immigrant O....so you'd kind of not be an immigrant even though you are.

As stated much easier for a woman. But what would be the point to do it. Sure get a residence pemit, but a Thai citizen why?

Just to get residency you have to have been in the country for 3 years on a non immigrant visa and to earn more than 60,000 baht per month for 3 years.

You also need to be able to speak Thai to a certain standard.

It would be beneficial though to have the citizenship if you could get it. If you're American at least, they allow dual citizenship so you'd have both - travel into Thailand on the Thai one and travel into the US on the American one (which is what I do now with my American passport and use my British passport for Thailand). Not sure about England, but i think it's the same??

Re: how hard is it too become a thai citizen?

i think there is a lot of difference between residency and citizenship.
residency takes money and spoken written thai to p6 level, which isn't that difficult.
citizenship is almost impossible, as KK said the easiest way to get it is to live here forever, and do something amazing for thailand like guiding their football team to world cup victory.
this would definitely get you citizenship. i may be wrong but our own ajarn andrew has been knocked back on citizenship, this is second hand info tho so it could well be incorrect.
