But, you would ride a bike??? I thought by your comments in another thread you were against it.

Johnny, How much they offer for your kid?

Did they want him/her full time or just for a few years? How old was the sprog when they made the offer?

I'm beginning to sense a business opportunity.

I hope you guys aren't from the states 'cause public school education here is shit. When my Thai friend moved to the States from Thailand at the age of 13, she said she didn't have to do anything for the first two years because the American education was so far behind the education she got in Thailand. I'm sure it's a lot better in parts of Europe, though.

Public schools in the Redmond/Kirkland/Totem Lake/Bellevue area are fantastic...Microsoft Country is the place to be :chug: if you can handle Washington State

If even true ( as she could be full of shit and just didn't 'do anything' for 2 years because she was in fact incapable)...it could also be a consequence of her coming from top tier schooling in Thailand to public school in America.

Don't forget that most of the foreigners that can afford to move to the States and England (and to a lesser extent, finances-wise, Australia, Canada, NZ)..are a 'higher class' of individual than their average 'countryman'...

I can tell you with supreme confidence that my older sons Thai education at a mid-tier Catholic school falls so short of the basic education that he was recieving at a public school in Canada; and this is in what is one of the most arguably depressed and low-class areas of my home province.

You might even have to go to an International School in Bangkok to produce an individual as well rounded.

Just look to myself when considering what a Canadian public school is capable of putting out.

She wasn't lying, but did come from the middle class. I know that she went to a Christian school, but that her parents chose it because it was supposed to be a better one. So, you're right, my example is skewed.

My guess is that Canadian schools are a little better than American, just a guess. We have to have metal detectors in some of our schools. The highschool I went to, which used to be considered well above average, is now a dangerous place where kids don't learn shit (not to say that I did either, but I many have had some choice, no much).

    I rent a motorbike.

And if I lived in Bangkok, and earned $100,000 per year, I would NOT be stupid enough to buy and drive a car.

Having a car does not mean a person has money, either.
    Correct.

However, the previous comment is one that is common with those who cannot afford to buy a car (not saying you can't, just what I've observed). And then the moment those folks can and DO buy cars, it's automatically no longer "stupid" to own one. If and when you're making $100,000 a year here, you likely wouldn't have to be driving when everyone else is on the road en masse. This is what most who make such blanket generalizations fail to realize. They are looking at the world from the point of view of being stuck in gridlocked rush hour traffic. In reality, Bangkok has some of the highest levels of driving enjoyment around (between 11pm and 4am..... not to mention super lax moving violations law enforcement). Texas has some nice open roads and all.... but you definitely cannot drive 160-170 kph on the interstate EVERY single day and not get a ticket (or go to jail). Car parts (anywhere in the world have cheaper prices on Yokohama racing tires?), fuel, service... all super affordable when compared to many places in the world.

I have both a car & motorcycle (2 actually) & am living in BKK... ironically, I never use the car & use either a motorcycle to work, or taxi into BKK central... The car is just in case one needs it... ie. a total waste of money...

Taking a risk of being punished and snubbed for posting on the topic, I will be retiring in the LoS hopefully this year. Just came back from a 30 vacation there. Had the usual good time, used some time in checking our retirement plans for holes, mistakes, etc and doing a thorough recon of our proposed home site.

    Looks good so far.

In answer to the ISB query, I worked it out a couple of years ago to be about 1.4 million Baht for the first year (you have to pay an enrolment fee) as opposed to 700k for a far superior education at somewhere like Harrow, Shrewsbury, Regents et al.

Actually, my fave junior skool is Kesinee - I think they do a great job there.

Back to the thread, I'm looking to keep a place on here, but get a place in Phnom Penh and maybe somewhere up north as well within the next three years all being well.
