I've been asked to post this information on Worldwide Movers for those making a household move out of Bangkok to other parts of the world. While it may be more appropriate in another forum the Pub is really the only one I come in these days. Feel free to move it.
Hopefully this information will still useful to some and reasonably up to date if you need to use it.
Cheers
ZOE
The following three WORLDWIDE MOVERS, all located in Bangkok, submitted quotes for 5cu meters of household goods by sea container from Bangkok to Calgary via Vancouver, Canada. Prices are in CA$ include packing at origin, fumigation, paperwork, customs formalities on both ends, and delivery into our address at destination.
To Calgary via Vancouver
HK Transpack (02-259-0088) $1445
Four Winds (02-681-0036-38 $1204
Crown (02-249-0219) $1295
The following two carriers were NOT full service, but provided pickup of the stuff you packed in Bangkok as well as customs clearances, fumigation, and crating/on-loading on the BKK end only. Custom clearance and other transhipping at the destination port were the customer’s responsibility.
To Vancouver Only
BKK Parcel Service (02-267-4788-89) $1040
Mac Nels (02-295-2071) $834
It’s pretty easy to see that for an extra 200-400 dollars, getting the goods packed in BKK, then offloaded, transhipped, cleared and delivered at origin was a small price to pay for the convenience. We went with Crown because they demonstrated continued interest in doing the work, were able to deal with it end to end, and because they reduced the price at our request. In the end it worked out very well. Khun Benchawan at Crown's Bangkok office was delightful to work with.
BTW, all carriers push insurance. No carrier disclosed the percentage of insurance claims they dealt with, but all pushed the insurance throughout the process as though it happens often. I think it’s like free money for them and the actual claims are very low. Your call. You cannot partial insure a shipment, and are required to declare new values for everything. Rates are high. We declined insurance and everything arrived in perfect condition.
Hope this helps a bit for anyone looking to ship household goods out of Bangkok.
