Thread: My first shakedown from the Boys in Brown

Went over to Sukhumvit Soi 3 (Little Arabia) tonight for a couple of those chicken rollups that are so good. Then went over to Soi 7 for a single whiskey soda. I live over in a side soi off Soi 22. I was in a taxi, about 100 meters from home, when a couple of cops on a motorcycle pulled my taxi over. "What's your name, where do you live, where were you, where are you going? ..."

They then had me get out of the car (paid no attention to the driver) and frisked me. Had me empty my pockets, checked wallet, coin purse, handkerchief, mobile phone, .... Asked for my passport, but didn't seem to mind that I was only able to show them a photocopy of the signature and visa pages.

I guess they were looking for a joint or little bit of yaba to implement the full shakedown mode. None of that "probable cause" crap that we are used to in America for a search in the LOS I guess. I was clean, and just happy to get my wallet back and be on my way. I have lived here eight months, so still a newbie. But I don't drive, and really didn't think that I would have much opportunity to interact with local law enforcement. I have made it a point to cross the street when I see them coming, but they sure had me going tonight.

unfortunate mate. i've heard of that exact thing happening to a friend of mine in bangkok, only once tho...i've never had any dealing with old bill in five years...

Doesn't sound like much fun.

Reminds me though of LDMA's suggestion to keep your emassy number locked on the cell phone and be very discreet regarding those other matters.

Don't know what else to say. Sounds pretty damn random to me and Probable cause don't mean shit here.

It's happened to me before, going out to meet a mate for a few brewskies. Gave me the once over and once they realised I had nothing they could fuck me over with let me be on my way lol.

No biggie really, as long as they don't plant anything on you there is nothing to worry about.

Yeah, I never even thought of them planting something and then paying me a little visit at home. I had a little buzz on and there was definitely some confusion, one of them stroking my trousers and then other one going through my wallet ... Come to think of it, that part sounds like a typical night at Nana ....

I was walking along Soi 22 in the early hours one morning and the exact same thing happened to me. Two cops on a motorcycle, photocopy passport was good enough for them and they went through my wallet and pockets. Ironically I had just being drinking at a policeman friend's apartment at the end of the soi and thought a stroll down the soi would be prefferable to overpaying the motorpschyo taxi boys.

Have also heard a friend of a friend got busted down there for whilst going along the soi with a joint on him.

Might be 'cause it's near the slum areas where the drugs are more rife.

what i always did. then shrink them both down to credit card size and laminate.

^that's what I do/did s well as your arrival ticket and latest immi. stamp. It's kind of shame that Thailand doesn't do what Korea does and issue an ARC (Alien Reg. Card). I mean, who the hell wants to walk around with their passport/work permit on any given day.
